For courses in Intermediate Spanish, 3rd/4th semester.

Portales is a content based text that helps students develop connections to the world around them by further developing their Spanish language skills as they study other high-interest disciplines.  Featuring a student-centered approach to the learning and teaching of Spanish, this National Standards-based text systematically integrates skills and culture in a lively, cutting-edge communicative format. Portales opens many doors for students by providing the tools and strategies needed to broaden their study of the Spanish language and the Hispanic world.

  • Takes a  content-based approach

o     Shifts the focus of instruction from the learning of Spanish per se to the learning of Spanish through reading, writing, listening and speaking about other subjects, framed within a cultural context.

  • Encourages student communication

o    Provides opportunities for students to talk about themselves and their communities; immerse themselves in high-interest subjects and cultural materials; and make thoughtful comparisons and contrasts between other cultures and their own.

  • Thorough integration of skills and culture

o    Teaches students to become active negotiators of meaning by guiding them sequentially through speaking, listening, reading and writing strategies that incorporate cultural topics.

  • Offers two grammar guides

o    Provides students with guided exercises, explanations, and self-check activities for each chapter as well as opportunities to assimilate general grammatical rules through an inductive presentation of grammar.

  • A flexible format

o     Gives instructors the option of starting with any chapter within each of the two divisions of the text and moving seamlessly to a previous or future point in that unit.
