For courses in Pharmacology.

Using a strong pathophysiology prototype approach to place drugs in context with how they are used therapeutically, this text gives students a clear picture of the importance of pharmacology to disease and ultimately to patient care. This holistic perspective to patient care is organized according to the body systems and diseases with complete information on the drug classifications used to treat the diseases. An easy to follow presentation and extensive pedagogical aids enable students to identify key ideas, understand concepts and apply essential components of anatomy, physiology and pathology relevant to drug therapy.

  • Pathophysiology–The organization by body systems and diseases clearly places the drugs in context with how they are used therapeutically.
    • The student is able to easily locate all relevant anatomy, physiology, pathology and pharmacology in the same chapter in which the drugs are discussed.

  • Prototype Drugs–To facilitate learning, a prototype approach is used in which the one or two most representative drugs in each classification are introduced in detail. Prototype Drug boxes are used to clearly indicate these important medications. Note that herb-drug interactions are included.
  • Focused Nursing Content–Nursing process Focus Flowcharts present succinct, pharmacology-oriented information focused on the classification or prototype drug. Need-to-know nursing actions are presented in a format that reflects the flow of the nursing process: nursing assessment, potential nursing diagnoses, planning, interventions, patient education/discharge planning, and evaluation. The Nursing Process Focus Flowcharts identify clearly what nursing actions are most important.
  • Media Resources.
    • Provides students and instructors a host of print and technology resources including online course management solutions in Blackboard, WebCT, and CourseCompass, student CD-ROM instructor¿¿¿s resource CD-ROM, companion website, student study guide, and instructors resource manual. Each contain a wealth of indispensable information and the student CD-ROM, instructor¿¿¿s resource CD-ROM, and online course management solution include interactive animations and videos.

  • Disease and Body System Approach.
    • Gives students a clear picture of the importance of pharmacology to disease and patient care.

  • Mechanism in Action Animations–State-of-the-art animations on the free CD-ROM
    • Show drug action at the system, tissue, and molecular levels for prototype drugs. Visualization adds clarity and reinforces drug action discussions in the chapters.

  • Medialink–Included at the beginning of each chapter.
    • Identifies specific animations, MediLinks, and other resources available to the student on the accompanying CD-ROM and Companion Website. MediaLink serves as a gateway to additional learning.

  • Drugs at a Glance
    • Presents a quick way for students to see the classifications and prototypes that are covered in the chapter, organized by disorder.

  • Drug Tables–Organized by classification and summarize the drugs used to treat each disease.
    • Provide the most important information for each drug in a user-friendly format. Drugs that are highlighted as prototypes within that chapter are also identified with a Prototype icon.

  • PharmFacts feature.
    • Puts the disease in a social and economic perspective.

  • Critical Thinking Questions–Foster this essential component of effective nursing practice.
    • Answers to selected questions are provided.

  • NCLEX Review on the Student CD-ROM and the Companion Website
    • Offer students numerous opportunities for practicing NCLEX questions.

  • Natural Therapies features–Present a popular herbal or dietary supplement that may be considered along with conventional drugs.
  • Bioterrorism Content–Discusses the nurse's role and topics such as anthrax, viruses, and neurotoxins.
  • Special Considerations feature –Present a variety of special issues related to culture, ethnicity, age, gender, and psychosocial considerations in drug therapy.
