Description

For undergraduate courses in Introductory, Preparatory, and Basic Chemistry.

Introductory Chemistry develops a unique systematic approach to problem solving using Solutions Maps and multi-column Procedure-Example boxes. This aptly paced and consistently logical approach will guide the anxious and inexperienced students in this course through the process of solving chemical problems. Problem solving skills are emphasized throughout each chapter, developed through many in-chapter examples, reviewed in unique chapter summaries, and practiced and synthesized in end-of-chapter exercises. The molecular art is groundbreaking in this market—student visualization is greatly enhanced. Integrated applications make the chemistry lively and interesting. This text focuses on the development of basic chemical principles including chemical bonding, atomic structure, and gas laws.

Features

  • PROBLEM SOLVING:
  • Issue: Many students need help learning how to effectively solve problems in logical steps and obtain a meaningful answer.

  • Problem Solving skills and the “Solution Map.”
    • Teaches students how to systematically solve chemical problems using dimensional analysis; students learn how to think through chemical problems. The visual solution map helps visual students “see” how to solve the problem.

  • Skillbuilder and Skillbuilder Plus practice exercises—Paired appropriately with certain worked-out Examples, the student is given an immediate opportunity to get hands-on practice in how to solve a problem logically. Skillbuilder exercises mimic the Example; Skillbuilder Plus exercises are a little more challenging. Answers to both are given in a special Answer Section at the end of the chapter.
  • Three Column Problem Solving Procedures.
    • Teaches students problem-solving skills by showing two worked examples of the procedure side-by-side. Students can use the same procedure to solve the two accompanying skillbuilder exercises.

  • End-of-chapter exercises—Contain a wide variety of problems. Questions are qualitative and will require the student to summarize important concepts. The Problemsare quantitative, paired, and divided by section. Cumulative problemsrequire students to synthesize several of the skills they have learned thus far. Highlight problemsare within a relevant or well-known context that will often include art or photos.
    • Provides students with plenty of questions to practice chemistry.

  • VISUALIZATION:
  • Issue: Students often have trouble picturing chemistry at the molecular level.

  • Molecular Art and Visualization throughout.
    • Beginning with the Chapter Opener illustrations, the book encourages students to visualize the molecular world and "see" everyday chemistry from a molecular point of view.

    • Illustrations are uniformly excellent, showing a distinctive style without appearing unusual or cartoony. The colors are vibrant and little details such as a texture on the molecules and ions are a special touch. Best artwork out there at this level.

APPLICATIONS/RELEVANCE:Issue: Students may fail to see how chemistry relates to the world around them or their courses within their major.

  • Chapter Openers—Opens each chapter with a description of something practical and applied that demonstrates the need for the material covered in that chapter. These openers often involve consumer, environmental, or societal issues.
    • Helps the student understand why it is important to learn the material.

  • Interest Boxes—Including Chemistry of the Common, Chemistry in the Media, Chemistry in the Environment, and Chemistry and Health.
    • Shows students that what they just learned is clearly relevant and encourages them to apply these principles.

  • Chapter in Review Sections—Reviews chemical principles and chemical skills at the end of each chapter.
    • Gives the student a clear place to review the chapter and a good resource to study for exams.

2 Versions

  • Complete content (full version)—Ideal for courses that require more complete coverage, including organic and biochemistry.
  • Streamlined version available—Omits chapters on organic and biochemistry.
    • Provides students with a shorter text that is less expensive for use by professors whose curriculum does not include organic chemistry and biochemistry.

Reviews

"Having now looked at all the chapters, I see a text that will likely capture the attention of a great many instructors such as myself. I like Tro's style of writing, and am also quite happy with his effort to develop problem solving skills. I think the text is crisp in that it gets to the key points in a clear and direct way without a lot of beating around the bush, yet it does so in a way that I think will capture students' interest." — Kim D. Summerhays, University of San Francisco

"I think the strengths of this book are its lucidity, the aggressive use of visual images to continually reinforce the atomic/ molecular nature of matter, the wonderful array of problems, end-of-chapter problems, and thought-provoking 'Everyday Chemistry' type essays. I would describe this book as both highly visual and personal. More so than other books in this same realm, Tro does an excellent job of using visual evidence for the students, from the solution map to the many illustrations." — Donald C. Davis, College of Lake County

"I like the solution map strategy. It emphasizes the logic of solving problems with units serving as a road map. Students must learn to think about setting up the problem before calculating an answer. Other texts give examples using a step-by-step process and emphasize unit conversions, but they do not emphasize the thought process behind the set-up as much as the Tro text." — Donna G. Friedman, St.Louis Community College at Florissant Valley

"I think the art looks great. The illustrations are uniformly excellent, showing a distinctive style without appearing unusual or cartoony. The colors are vibrant and little details such as a texture on the molecules and ions are nice. Best artwork out there at this level, I believe. Stunning visuals such as Figure 70.2 are powerful ways for students to learn tricky concepts." — C. Michael McCallum, University of the Pacific
