For courses in Freshman Composition—Rhetoric and English Composition.

This text and its accompanying course site (available in Blackboard, WebCT, and CourseCompass) serve as a comprehensive rhetoric, reader, research guide, and handbook. It provides students with an introduction to critical reading and writing, and an overview of a variety of writing tasks—ranging from reflective essays to critical analysis to argument and persuasion assignments. Students will grow as writers and thinkers as they read and discuss controversial issues that affect them both locally and globally.

  • Requires students to use search engines and Web tools such as Bulletin Boards, Bookmarks, and Web browsers while they are involved in reading and writing tasks, not through isolated practice. Ex.___

• Use of online sources—e.g., The Atlantic Monthly; Salon Magazine; and The New York Times.

  • Enables students and instructors to customize course content by making careful selections form online sources. Ex.___

• An online anthology, newspaper, and magazine collection.

  • Gives students starting points for reading and writing activities, and easy access to local, national, and international sources. Ex.___

• Optional chapter writing assignments—Includes prewriting; drafting; revision exercises; topic proposal forms; and online surveys.

  • Encourages students to explore topic ideas in online forums and to publish their writing in online resource collections—such as book and record review sites, consumer guide collections, or online letters-to-the-editor. Ex.___

• Online bulletin board discussion areas—Inlcudes carefully designed questions to facilitate collaborative development of knowledge and technical expertise.

  • Helps instructors create a lively and interactive learning environment. Helps students move through the writing process at their own pace, and stimulates discussion and interaction with each other. Ex.___

• A flexible structure—Features self-contained reading and writing components that do not depend upon prior assignments or readings.

  • Allows instructors to teach the course as it was designed or rearrange its parts to fit their own syllabus. Ex.___
