For differential equations courses.

Written for beginning students, this well organized introduction promotes a solid understanding of differential equations with a flexible presentation. With less emphasis on formal calculation than other texts, all the basic methods are covered—linear, separable, and exact equations—as well as higher order cases, linear equations with constant and variable coefficients, Laplace transform methods, and nonlinear systems. The text's systems focus induces an intuitive understanding of the concept of a solution of an initial value problem in order to resolve potential confusion about what is being approximated when a numerical method is used.

  • Stability of stationary points introduced early.
    • Provides students with a presentation that avoids formal computation. Diagrams also appeal to and motivate students.

  • Consistent approach used for first order and higher order linear equations and linear systems—Enables students to recognize the special nature of linear equations and systems.
    • Introduces students to the qualitative properties of linear equations and systems early on so that formal technique becomes comprehensible when it is encountered in several settings.

  • Emphasis on visualization using direction fields, vector fields, and phase portraits.
    • Enables students to create these diagrams with a computer and aids in their understanding of qualitative theory.

  • Treatment of systems accessible without linear algebra background—Without sacrificing essential role of characteristic vectors and characteristic roots.
    • Provides students with the algorithm for solving homogeneous systems, an essential link between linear algebra and differential equations.

  • Numerical methods and Euler's methods fully discussed—Provides the key to understanding the concept of a differential equation.
    • Encourages students to use more advanced methods in a users guide.

  • Extensive pedagogical aids—e.g. chapter glossaries, review exercises, boxed points, reviews of complex numbers and power series.
    • Provides students with helpful study aids and review vehicles that highlight important points.
