For courses in Management Science, Decision Modeling and Quantitative Analysis in schools of business. Can be used in either the undergraduate or graduate course.

This new text emphasizes the use of spreadsheets as a tool to quickly set up and solve decision models but remains at heart a management science text that provides a clear presentation of fundamental concepts, assumptions and limitations behind each decision model.

  • Standard layout and format for creating effective Excel models–The authors use a standardized layout and format for creating spreadsheet models for all linear, integer, goal, and nonlinear programming problems.
    • Provides a consistent approach more suited to the beginning student of these decision models.

  • Pedagogical use of color in the spreadsheets–As part of the standardized layout and format for the spreadsheet models, the authors have used colors in a consistent manner so that the various components of the models are easily identifiable.
    • Permits students to quickly identify the various components of each model so that they can focus on understanding the underlying decision model, rather than the Excel formulas.

  • Numerous screen captures of Excel outputs with detailed callouts–Each screen shot has been annotated with detailed callouts explaining the important entries and components of the model.
    • Permits students to quickly understand the logic of the spreadsheet layout, and identify the appropriate Excel formulas and procedures for the various decision modeling techniques discussed in the text.

  • Balance–Describes the algebraic model and its spreadsheet implementation for ALL examples. The spreadsheet layout then closely follows the algebraic model for ease of understanding.
    • Permits students to understand what they are doing, and whythey are doing it, rather than just mechanically learning which Excel formula to use or which Excel key to press.

  • Discussion of LP sensitivity analysis using the Solver report is more comprehensive than any competing textbook!
    • Permits students to understand and analyze several issues such as the value of each resource, effect of simultaneous changes, and pricing-out of new products.

  • The ability to teach topics both with or without the use of additional add-ins or software. Several topics can be studied either using Excel's standard built-in commands or using additional Excel add-ins or other software. For example, the text explains how Excel's built-in Data Table procedure can be used to replicate large simulation models, or, how Crystal Ball 2000 can be used to develop simulation models. Likewise, we have discussed how Microsoft Project 2000 can be used to effectively manage large projects.
    • Permits students to make effective use of Excel to analyze decision models even when special add-ins are not installed or available.

  • Software packages are provided free on the student CD-ROM–Crystal Ball Professional 2000, Student Edition (140 days), Premium Solver for Education, TreePlan. In addition, all examples, set up in Excel files, are provided on the CD.
    • Permits students to easily see how all examples discussed in the text were solved, and replicate these if desired.
