• Unifying Themes—Underlying evolutionary and molecular themes throughout the book reveal the integrative nature of biology. The following synthesis tools are incorporated:

  • Evolution and the use of phylogenetic tree diagrams are introduced in Chapter 1 and woven throughout the text.

  • Fundamental molecular and evolutionary topics are introduced, then incorporated in context throughout the book (i.e. evolutionary examples in the cell/molecular coverage and the molecular examples in the organismal coverage).

  • Students understand connections and the “bigger picture” of biology instead of learning material as isolated concepts.

• The Visual Program—Dr. Kim Quillin, an artist with a Ph.D. in Integrative Biology, worked with the author to create a consistent art style, color palette, graphic design, and figure layout throughout the book that is pedagogically effective for students. Art and text were developed simultaneously and speak the same language. Interactive illustrations (questions and exercises embedded in captions) motivate students to think. Data graphics and tree diagrams are presented in an accessible, streamlined way to encourage student participation.

  • The art program is uncluttered and tightly focused on the central teaching point in each figure.

APPLICATIONS

• Essays—Found at the end of each chapter, place the chapter material in a relevant context by demonstrating the biology and current research behind contemporary topics and issues. Examples include the essays in Chapter 11, “How Do Viruses Work?” Chapter 17, “Controversies over Genetically Modified Foods,” and Chapter 43, “Sprinters and Marathoners: Born or Made?”

THE FREEMAN STORY

• A Community Effort—During the course of this project, contributors, reviewers, and instructors from each area of biology were brought together annually to work with Dr. Freeman to ensure appropriate coverage, accuracy of the content, and presentation of both classical and current research in a given field.

• The Review Program—Dr. Freeman's chapters underwent an exhaustive review program, including over 300 reviews from both experts and star teachers. Over 30 accuracy experts examined book pages for accuracy during the production and printing process. Over 100 student reviews were also solicited to confirm the readability and the level of the content.

• The Media and Instructor Support Program—Resources include tools for lecture presentation, assessment, communication, and course management, as well as the entire student media package. The student media resources contain tutorials to help students understand difficult concepts, animations that present biological processes, assessment tools, and review of basic skills.
