This text is highly dependable, having been fine-tuned over many years. Hallmarks are accuracy, precision, depth, strong student support and abundant, thorough, and varied exercise sets. This title is fairly traditional and has optional graphing calculator coverage throughout. Approach to trigonometry is right-triangle first. Part of a four title series.

  • NEW—Three part case study at Motorola—Each chapter begins with a Field Trip to Motorola, followed by an Interview at Motorola, and ends with a Project at Motorola (written by a Motorola employee). It doesn't get more REAL than this.
    • Helps students see the true relevance and usefulness of mathematics. Offers real case studies for end of chapter projects.
  • NEW—“Preparing for This Section” —Referenced list that opens each section.
    • Provides a “just-in-time” review for students.
  • NEW—New design—Utilizes multiple colors to enhance accessibility.
    • Highlights important concepts for students.
  • NEW—Updated Graphing Utilities Appendix—Includes the latest features of the graphing calculator. While use of the graphing calculator remains optional, graphing icons referencing the Appendix occur at the appropriate places in the text for those inclined to use the graphing calculator features of the text.
  • “Now Work Problem xx” —Appear after a concept has been introduced. Identified with a pencil icon.
    • Encourages students to pause and work an exercise problem to ensure the previous concept was understood before moving on.
  • Multiple source applications—Drawn from tax tables, the Guinness Book of World Records, newspaper articles, and texts in economics, chemistry, etc.
    • Allows students to make the connection between familiar situations and learned math concepts.
  • Numerous graduated examples and exercises—Many of which are applied.
    • Helps students build confidence and master the concepts.
  • “Calculator icon” —Designates selected examples.
    • Invites students to use a graphing calculator for checking or exploration when appropriate.
  • Optional Comments, Explorations, Seeing the Concept, and Examples—Utilize the graphing calculator and are clearly marked with a calculator icon. Calculator exercises are also identified by the icon and appear in green.
    • Enables students to clearly identify which tool is appropriate with a specific exercise.
  • Discussion, writing, and research problems—Appear in each exercise set, are identified by an icon, and are red.
    • Provide the basis for class discussion, writing projects, and class discussion.
  • Detailed review closes each chapter—Includes important formulas, theorems, definitions, and objectives—as well as a complete set of Review Exercises with sample test questions.
    • Summarizes the chapter material with related features that allow students to expand and test their knowledge.
  • NEW—Reorganized content for Algebra and Trigonometry.
    • Chapter R: Review—Revision of previous Chapter 1, referenced throughout the book when review of content may be needed.
    • The discussion of Polynomial and Rational Inequalities now appears after Polynomial and Rational Functions, allowing students to use the information about the graphs to solve the inequalities. Students and professors will appreciate how easily this usually tough concept is now handled.
    • Zeros of a Polynomial Function now appears in a separate Chapter following Polynomial and Rational Functions to provide more flexibility in teaching and testing.
    • Separate chapters on Sequences, Induction, the Binomial Theorem, and Counting and Probability also provide more flexibility in coverage.
    • Trigonometric Functions—Graphs of the sine and cosine functions and sinusoidal graphs are now combined. Separate sections on the remaining graphs and Phase Shifts as well as Sinusoidal Curve Fitting provide flexibility and ease of coverage.
    • Analytic Trigonometric—This chapter begins with two sections that discuss the Inverse Trigonometric Functions and concludes with two sections devoted to Trigonometric Equations. These changes allow for a “one period per section” approach.

(NOTE: Each chapter concludes with Chapter Review and Project at Motorola.)
