Teaching Mathematics to children can be overwhelming and frustrating as well as gratifying. Frequently the instruction children find in the classroom differs greatly from the intuitive mathematical reasoning they bring with them to school. If you could really understand the ways individual children approach math problems, and get to know the unique and creative ways children think mathematically, you would be better able to guide each child's developing foundational knowledge and build deep and powerful understandings.
The best way to help children understand mathematics is to understand the way they think mathematically. What this revolutionary CD will help you see is that children are creative thinkers, capable of rich mathematical reasoning.
This CD contains 25 video clips designed to be used with prospective elementary school teachers enrolled in mathematics courses or in mathematics methods courses, with practicing teachers, or with graduate students. The mathematics content of the clips is early number, place value, and rational number. Some clips show children in Grades 1—5 solving problems; others show problem solving in classrooms. A few clips were designed to illustrate interviewing children to assess their mathematical thinking. The CD is accompanied by a video guide containing suggestions for using each video clip and reflection questions.
After studying the video clips on this CD, you will be better prepared for your own mathematics classroom because you will better understand the way children think through mathematical problems and the best ways to support their developing comprehension.
This product accompanies:
Long, DeTemple & Millman,
Mathematical Reasoning for Elementary Teachers, 5/E
O'Daffer, Charles, Cooney, Dossey & Schielack,
Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers, 4/E
Beckmann,
Mathematics for Elementary Teachers plus Activities Manual, 2/E
Billstein, Libeskind & Lott,
Problem Solving Approach to Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers, A, 9/E
The children in these video clips are typical children found in schools all over the county and the strategies they use and the ways they think are common.
