Known for examples and analogies that resonate with readers, this clearly-written book guides students through biology’s complex topics.

For courses in Introductory Biology for non-majors.Every aspect of Biology: A Guide to the Natural World was written and illustrated to guide non-majors through biological concepts and develop their sense of scientific literacy. It has come to be known as a book students enjoy reading. The Third Edition builds upon Krogh's popular strengths–an accessible and engaging writing style, an original illustration program, and a complete instructor and student resource package.

  • Accessible writing style—Walks students step by step through complex biological processes and captures their interests with analogies from everyday life, history, art and literature.
  • Science as a way of learning—Presents science as a process, highlights how our knowledge has been acquired, and demonstrates the logic of evolutionary thinking.
    • Encourages students to think like scientists and "do" science wherever possible; helps students develop sound thinking and reasoning skills that can be applied to any subject.

  • NEW - Revised illustration program—Features more vibrant colors and greater three-dimensional detail; key information has been moved from the text into the illustrations.
  • NEW - Increased coverage of the diversity of the living world—Expands coverage from 2 to 3 chapters on the subject: one on animals, one on plants and fungi, and one on viruses, bacteria, archaea, and protists.
  • NEW - A new stand-alone chapter on Immunology.
    • Helps students understand the complexities of the immune system more clearly.

  • Web Tutorials—Lead students through a series of biological-related concepts with animations, interactive exercises, and quizzes for review of difficult concepts.
  • MediaLabs—Connect biological concepts to real-world applications; ask students to do Web Tutorials, Web Investigations, and then communicate their results.
    • Links biological concepts to real-world issues and encourages students to think critically about those connections.

  • Instructor's Resource Center on CD—Gives instructors access to all of their resources in one place; includes animations, an Image Bank containing every illustration and most of the photos from the text, PowerPoint slides, the Test Item File, and the Instructor's Guide.
  • NEW - Revised human anatomy and physiology unit.
    • More applied coverage makes it clearer and more relevant to the lives of students.

  • NEW - A new stand-alone chapter on Immunology.
    • Helps students understand the complexities of the immune system more clearly.

  • NEW - A revamped biotechnology chapter— Focuses on four sharply defined areas: transgenic biotechnology, reproductive cloning, forensic biotechnology, and personalized medicine.
    • Gives students greater depth in a few areas rather than a shallow understanding of a broad spectrum of topics.

  • NEW - New and updated coverage of current topics—Relates biology to hot topics including global warming, human population growth, the dangers of suntans, etc.

  • Revised illustration program—Features more vibrant colors and greater three-dimensional detail; key information has been moved from the text into the illustrations.
  • Increased coverage of the diversity of the living world—Expands coverage from 2 to 3 chapters on the subject: one on animals, one on plants and fungi, and one on viruses, bacteria, archaea, and protists.

David Krogh has been writing about science for 20 years in newspapers, magazines, books, and for educational institutions. He is the author of Smoking: The Artificial Passion, an account of the pharmacological and cultural motivations behind the use of tobacco, which was nominated for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Science and Technology. David has written on physics and on technology issues, but his primary interest has been in biology. He has written on the possible effect methane may be having on global warming; on early research into the role that growth factors may play in neural regeneration following injury; on the synthesis of naturally occurring neurotoxins and their possible use in heart disease; on the use of imported drugs to treat cancer; and on the relationship between alcohol and mood states in women. He has a particular interest in the history of biology and in the relationship between biological research and modern American culture. He holds bachelor's degrees in both journalism and history from the University of Missouri.
