For introductory Programming courses using Visual Basic.

The fourth edition of “An Introduction to Programming Using Visual Basic 6.0” was written in 1998, the year VB 6.0 first appeared. Since then, two upgrades of the operating system, two upgrades of Microsoft Office, and a new version of Visual Basic (VB.NET) have been released. Also, some of the technologies and tools that were in vogue in 1998 have been replaced since then. The Update Edition of the book addresses these issues, modernizes the book, and responds to some requests from instructors.

• NEW - An additional chapter titled “Introduction to Visual Basic .NET,” has been added—The chapter discusses the new features of VB.NET and explains how to transition from VB 6.0 to VB.NET.

  • Gives students and instructors a brief introduction to the new .NET technology.

• NEW - Two substantial programming projects have been added to Chapters 3 through 14—Screen captures have been upgraded to Windows XP style forms.

• NEW - Many exercises and examples use real data—This data has been made current.

• NEW - The discussion of Automation has been revised so that it also works with Microsoft Office 2000 and XP.

• NEW - Named constants are now covered.

• NEW - The discussion of VB Script has been revised to be more consistent with the way people currently write Web pages.

• NEW - The discussion of computers and Windows in Sections 1.2 and 1.3 has been modernized.

• NEW - Several advances in computers and computer science have been added to the Biographical History of Computing.

• NEW - In Chapter 12, the use of DAO database technology has been replaced with the newer ADO technology.

• An expanded discussion of debugging and error-prevention.

  • Prepares students to address these issues in their future programming.

• Updated and revised real-life data in the examples and exercises.

  • Allows students to relate to, appreciate, and feel comfortable with the material.

• An engineering supplement can now be packaged with the text.

  • Gives students access to additional examples, exercises, and programming projects.
