For a one- or two-term course in Liberal Arts Mathematics, Survey of Mathematics, Finite Mathematics, and Mathematics for education majors.

Known for their well-conceived, relevant applications and meticulously annotated examples, Bob Blitzer's books balance the needs of appropriate coverage and student motivation while helping students develop strong critical thinking skills. This text gives students the skill-building and practice essential at this level, along with the applications and technology needed to foster an appreciation of mathematics through their college careers and beyond. Blitzer's goal is to show students how mathematics can be applied to their lives in interesting, enjoyable, and meaningful ways. His accessible writing style helps students relate to and grasp the material.

  • Abundant step-by-step, annotated Examples—Provide students with a problem-solving approach to reach the solution. This helps students through "sticking points" that can cause their enthusiasm to wane during assignments and study. Annotations are conversational in tone, explaining key steps and ideas as the problem is solved.
  • Check Point Examples—Each worked example is followed by a similar matched example offering students the opportunity to test their understanding of the example. The answers to the Check Points are provided in the answer section.
  • Extensive, well-organized exercise sets that precisely parallel Examples at the end of each section.
    • Organized into six categories for instructor flexibility: Practice Exercises, Application Exercises, Writing in Mathematics, Technology Exercises, Critical Thinking Exercises, Group Activity Exercises.

    • The order of the practice exercises is exactly the same order as the order of the section's illustrative examples.

    • The parallel order enables students to refer to the titled examples and their detailed explanations to achieve success working the practice exercises.

  • Unique Chapter- and Section-Opening Vignettes—Begins each section with a compelling vignette highlighting an every day scenario, posing a question about it, and exploring how the chapter section subject can be applied to answer the question. These scenarios are revisited in the course of the chapter or section example, discussion or exercise.
  • Explanatory Voice Balloons—Used in a variety of ways to demystify mathematics. They:
    • Translate mathematical ideas into plain English

    • Help clarify problem-solving procedures

    • Present alternative ways of understanding concepts

    • Connect complex problems to the basic concepts students have already learned.

  • Clearly Stated Section Objectives—Help students recognize and focus on the most important ideas, and appear in the margin at their point of use.
  • Chapter Tests—Enable students to assess their understanding of the contents from the chapter.

  • New, innovative applications with updated real-world data—Includes a discussion of corporate scandals and ramifications for the long-range investor at a time when the perception of deception is so widespread (section 8.6), student loans (section 2.1), world population (section 7.4, example 5), college tuition costs (section 6.4). Data is as recent as possible for a printed text.
  • Over 110 New Enrichment Essays ("Blitzer Bonuses") —Explore the ways in which mathematics both shapes and clarifies our world. These range from sneaky pricejacks (ch.1) to creating an inaccurate picture by leaving something out.
  • Over 700 new examples and exercises throughout the text—Includes more interesting and up-to-date data and/or better illustrated concepts.
  • Increased Study Tip Boxes—Offer suggestions for problem-solving, point out common errors to avoid, and provide informal hints and suggestions.
  • New Chapter Review Grids—The chapter summaries, presented as outlines in the second edition, are now organized into two-column review charts. The left column summarizes the definitions and concepts for every section of the chapter; the right column refers students by example number and page number to text examples that illustrate these key concepts.
  • Even more Technology Boxes—These optional boxes appear throughout the text, both in the discussion and exercises. They suggest hints for using calculators and computers.
  • Content changes:
    • Logic (Chapter 3, section 3.4) contains a new discussion on determining the truth value of a compound statement for a specific case.

    • Number Theory and the Real Number System (Chapter 5, section 5.3) contains a new discussion of mixed numbers and improper fractions.

    • Simple Interest (Section 8.2) now has a dedicated section, allowing a more thorough development of simple interest formulas, including applications requiring their algebraic manipulation. The section concludes with a new discussion of discounted loans, an application that uses the simple interest formula.

    • Compound Interest (Section 8.3) now has a dedicated section, focusing on the topic in more detail and allowing for a more meaningful algebraic discussion of effective annual yield.

    • Permutations (Section 11.2) contains a new discussion of permutations of duplicate items.

    • Voting and Apportionment (Chapter 14) and Graph Theory (Chapter 15), available previously only in the Expanded Second Edition, are now included in the Third Edition for instructors interested in exploring either of these topics.
