For two-semester courses in Principles of Economics.

This easy to read, accessible, macro-first principles text engages students with familiar real-world examples and applications that bring economics to life. The authors follow an Explore & Apply theme to show students how economics is a part of their everyday lives and how it can be a useful tool in making personal decisions and evaluating policy decisions.

Concise, yet complete coverage —Focuses on topics at the heart of economics.

~Exposes students to early coverage of consumer and producer surplus, utility and consumer decision, as well as government and market failure.

If you prefer to introduce short run issues before long run issues with the AS/AD covered first and only one chapter of the Keynesian Cross, or you prefer to append/skip coverage of the Keynesian Cross, examine Chapters 8 and 10, respectively.

Early coverage of the Aggregate Demand/Aggregate Supply model —In Chapter 8.

~Allows instructors the flexibility to decide which models are best suited for their students. Provides students with a comprehensive discussion of AD and its shift factors, and both long-run and short-run AS, and the macroeconomic equilibrium.

Early emphasis on Short Run —Introduces the output gap and inflationary/recessionary gaps along with the appropriate fiscal policies to address them.

~Exposes students to short-run adjustment processes, including cost-push inflation and the inflationary spiral. Offers instructors flexibility in terms of the order in which the chapters are covered.

Detailed and in-depth coverage of key economic concepts.

~Presents students with expanded multiplier content, new material of crowding out, greater detail on exchange rates, and more extensive treatment of antitrust, just to name a few.

Detailed graphs —With detailed labeling.

~Helps students to understand the shifts vs. movements in curves, and makes these difficult concepts understandable.

If you want to teach with a principles text that brings out economic applications for the purpose of creating informed citizens and voters, preview Ayers/Collinge's Economics Enhanced Edition and their "Explore and Apply" approach.

29 Explore & Apply sections —Address todays real-world, economic policy issues or events in the final section of every chapter.

~Enables students to evaluate with reference to the tools and concepts presented in the chapter, and examine both domestic and international topics.

Two Thinking Critically questions—Concludes each Explore & Apply section.

~Promotes economic reasoning and encourage students to develop their critical thinking skills.

Snapshots—Highlights three brief applications of the concepts in each chapter.

~Allows students to pause and consider the concepts they have just learned.

Chapter 5, Measuring National Output –Discusses in more detail how to compute GDP, including a more recognizable equation for building GDP. In addition, comprehensive definitions for real and nominal GDP, and a more complete circular flow diagram are presented.

~This helps students understand these critical foundations of macroeconomics.

Chapter 8, A Framework for Macroeconomic Analysis –Includes early coverage of AD/AS.   The Enhanced Edition offers expanded coverage of the differences between Keynesian and Classical economic thought and a comprehensive discussion of AD and its shift factors. Students are introduced to both long-run and short-run AS, and the macroeconomic equilibrium. Ch. 8 covers shifts in long-run AS and applies the long-run AS curve to questions pertaining to the long-run macro equilibrium. Supply side inflation and deflation are also explained.

~This organization allows instructors the flexibility to decide which models are best suited for their students.

Chapter 9, Fiscal Policy and Short-Run Instability –Introduces the multiplier effect and its significance for fiscal policy. The multiplier effect is explained conceptually and through graphical analysis. The output gap and inflationary/recessionary gaps are also introduced along with the appropriate fiscal polices to address them.   Finally, the crowding out effect is introduced and explained through fiscal policy.

~This coverage exposes students to short-run adjustment processes, including cost-push inflation and the inflationary spiral.

Chapter 10, Aggregate Expenditures –The Keynesian Cross is isolated in one chapter. By focusing on the keys of the income-expenditure model, this chapter can be covered or skipped without losing continuity. To facilitate student understanding, the chapter revisions include two new circular flow graphs that relate expansionary and contractionary fiscal policy to the circular flow, plus additional coverage of multiplier concepts, including numerical examples.

~This organization allows instructors to streamline their presentation and not overwhelm their students with excessive mathematical detail.

If you find it valuable to engage students in thinking critically about the impact that Social Security Systems and Tax Cuts will have on their age bracket, check out Ch 11 with Ayers and Collinge's enhanced coverage of Fiscal Policy.

Chapter 11, Fiscal Policy in Action –This chapter has been streamlined to more clearly focus on the macro components of government spending and tax policies.

~This information directly impacts students, and peaks the interest , keeping them involved with the course material.

Additional, 3rd test bank —Written by the authors for continuity with the text.

~Increases the number of questions, adding to the already robust, preexisting test banks.
