Recent headlines and current events continue to prove how crucial the field of accounting is to modern business. Organizing topics to match the way a business works, Financial Accounting: A Business Process Approach, 2/e is an excellent text for the first accounting course with its unique approach that focuses on the relationship between real-world business and the fundamentals of accounting.

How do you motivate your students to learn accounting?

Business Process Approach: While other texts rely on the balance sheet order–which doesn’t make sense to students just learning about the balance sheet–Financial Accounting organizes topics to reflect the way a business actually operates. It presents a business topic and then illustrates how we account for it. The text begins by introducing basic accounting concepts in the context of a small start-up company (Chapters 1-3) before advancing to such traditional accounting topics as long-term assets, inventory, cash and accounts receivable, debt, and equity–which are all introduced in an order that matches how real business works. This practical approach makes sense to readers and, therefore, provides an underlying motivation for students to learn about accounting.

Typically, what percentage of your students are accounting majors? How do you appeal to other business majors–and even non-business majors–in your classroom?

More business, less bookkeeping: All students, regardless of major, need to understand the basic relationship between business transactions and financial statements. Focusing more on what a business does–and less on the intricacies of bookkeeping–Financial Accounting, 2/e equips accounting majors and nonmajors alike with a solid understanding of financial statements. This approach provides a strong foundation for accounting majors while keeping the content relevant for all majors.

OTHER POINTS OF DISTINCTION

How do you ensure students fully understand financial statements?

To effectively use financial statements, students must first thoroughly understand how the statements are prepared. Nothing teaches this as well as actually preparing the statements, and Financial Accounting is packed with hands-on applications.

New Color-Coded Accounting Equation: Integrated throughout the text, this innovative tool enables students to see exactly how business transactions are summarized and presented on the each of the four basic financial statements.

New Problems: A new summary problem is included in each chapter.

More Exercises: Each chapter now includes an additional set of exercises.

New Section: End-of-chapter material includes a new section on Financial Statement Analysis, giving students additional hands-on practice.

How much do you emphasize debits and credits?

While the heart of Financial Accounting’s approach is the fundamental accounting equation and the path from business transactions to financial statements, this thorough text also includes the mechanics of debits and credits in an appendix for professors who want to use this tool.

How do you balance theory and actual practice?

Reimers’ unique business process approach teaches students about the way a business works and then illustrates how accounting fits into business processes. Tom’s Wear, a running case introduced early in the text, focuses on an entrepreneur, illustrating financial accounting concepts as he launches and grows his business. The new edition is packed with even more real-world examples throughout and also includes two sets of annual reports from actual companies—enabling readers to see how accounting information is presented in real business and preparing them for what they will encounter in their own careers.

How do you incorporate ethics coverage?

Widespread scandals rocking corporate America in recent years underscore the critical need for ethics emphasis in all areas of business. The new edition integrates ethics coverage throughout. Each chapter opens with a “Focus on Ethics” feature highlighting a current example of how important ethics is to accounting and business. Chapters also include a new section on Business Risk, Control, and Ethics.
