For the 1 or 2 semester course in Business Statistics.

This comprehensive, 17 chapter hardcover text builds student confidence by incorporating a step-by-step system for examples, exercises, and special review sections.  This step-by-step framework allows students to learn by example, practice with extensive exercises that step-up in level of difficulty, and solidify their understanding of the concepts with special review sections as they prepare for their exams.

It presents descriptive and inferential statistics with a rich assortment of business examples and real data with an emphasis on decision-making. There is emphasis on using statistical software as a tool, (featuring Excel and Minitab) with many examples presented in a software environment.

A briefer version is also available called A Course in Business Statistics 4e.

Groebner/Shannon/Fry/Smith builds student confidence by incorporating a step-by-step system for their examples, exercises, and special review sections.

How do you motivate students?

  • Captivating examples and applications, rich data sets
    • The examples are interesting, realistic and drawn from all areas of business and life. Every topic is introduced in the context of a real business application complete with data. Real data, from small and large data sets, are used liberally within the examples and exercises.

What type of software do you use with your students?

  • Features Excel and Minitab 14 Software output
  • the software is woven throughout the text in a seamless manner with a focus on interpretation of the software output. Simple instructions are placed next to the output so students can replicate the outcomes. See page 51.

What additional student resources are you interested in?

  • Student CD includes:
    • Lecture PowerPoints allow students to review and reinforce key points.
    • Excel and Minitab 14 PowerPoint Tutorials show students how to replicate the exact steps needed for a large number of the in-text examples.
    • Optional Topics cover Decision Analysis, Times-Series and Forecasting, Nonparametric Statistics, and Statistical Quality Control.
    • Excel Simulations allow students to do "what-if" analysis on several interactive simulations.
    • Data Sets for the examples. exercises, and cases are included in the following formats: Excel, Minitab, SPSS, SAS, and ASCII.
  • Student Solutions Manual contains worked-out solutions to the odd-numbered problems.
  • Key Formula Guide contains all the key formulas from the text in an easy to use format.  This may be value-packed for free with the text.
  • PH GradeAssist is an web-based system that automates assigning and grading of homework problems.  Access codes can be packaged for free with this text.

This text is available for personalization in the PHCBR custom database program.  Select only the chapters you require or supplement with recommended case studies all under one cover.  CLICK HERE to go directly to the PHCBR book-build site or visit our product page for additional information at pearsoncustom.com/business.

What type of exercises do you assign?  How do you judge the quality of the exercises/problem material? Do you like to build up student confidence by starting with basic drill questions and progressing to more challenging exercises?

  • Exercises– With the addition of many new problems, the exercises are now organized into the following categories: Skill Development, Business Applications, and Advanced Applications. These chapter exercises provide a logical flow from computational to introductory business applications to more challenging business problems using larger, real world data sets.
    •    Provides a natural sequence ranging from easy to advanced problems. See pages 324, 325, 326.

Do you assign/grade homework?  Would you be interested in an online resource that offered text specific questions that could be assigned for pratice or homework and save you grading time?

  • PH Grade Assist–This online homework system allows students to get additional practice and master their problem solving skills.
    • Allows instructors the flexibility to use this for practice or assignment purposes. Show OneKey with PH Grade Assist.

How do you think students use texts?  Do you think they read them cover to cover?  Do you think students learn by example? Would you be interested in a text that provides step-by-step coaching as they summarize key concepts and work examples?

  • Summary boxes–Throughout the text, the procedures are summarized in a clearly identified, step-by-step fashion.
    • Summarizes the skills students need to master. See page 315.

  • Step-by-Step solved examples– These boxed examples clearly show the step-by-step details to solving most of the problems.

    • Offers a built-in study tool as students prepare their homework assignments. See page 315.

Do you think students struggle with determining when and where to apply the appropriate techniques? Would you be interested in a text that used a step-by-step flow chart to help clarify when and where to use the right techniques?

  • Special review sections–Strategically positioned review sections (after ch. 1-3 and ch. 7-11) diagrams, charts, and comprehensive exercises to help students determine the correct analytical technique for problem solving.
    • Provides students with a clear summary of the concepts and techniques introduced in previous chapters. See pages 122-126 & 456-473.

Do your students stuggle with Hypothesis Testing coverage?

  • Coverage of Estimation and Hypothesis Testing is streamlined and improved–Chapters 8 and 9 now cover the tests for means and proportions only. Clear guidelines are provided on when to use the z and t-distributions. Hypotheses tests for one and two population variances have been moved to a separate chapter (Ch. 10).
    • Makes material easier to learn.
