This comprehensive, practical text is built on solid theory and evidence-based practices from both the fields of Special Education and Early Childhood Education. When the first edition was conceived in 1980, the authors encountered students who either had a strong special education background or a strong early childhood (child development) background. Each group had a lot to learn from the other and a lot to contribute to the other. The original purpose was to bring together the best from both fields into Early Childhood Special Education.
The text continues to take a practical, “activity based” approach that is theoretically sound and current. The text also provides ample detail related to specific intervention strategies that enhance teachers’ effective use of embedded learning opportunities within daily curriculum activities and routines. Its relatively jargon free, “readable” approach that is built on evidence-based practices make it appropriate for a wide range of readers. The illustrations of techniques and strategies throughout have made it sustainable as a resource long after students leave their formal education. It has always encouraged a family-centered, inclusive approach to working with young children with special needs and their families.
Given the lawand the moral obligationto provide educational opportunities for all young children with special needs in natural environments, students studying to become professionals in early childhood special education need to be surrounded with examples of practical and realistic curricular adaptations that make inclusion successful.
Totally unique to this text is the overview of models, strategies and challenges for providing inclusion support to young children with disabilities served in a variety of community settings. Readers are introduced to the critical role of collaboration, consultation and problem solving in support of young children with special needs. Finally, and also unique to this text, is a section with practical recommendations on how to work collaboratively with paraprofessionals.
Success of inclusion is highly dependent on the ability of professionals to work collaboratively with parents, related service personnel and other professionals. Effective collaboration requires skills in communication, conflict resolution and problem solving. Training in these areas is essential.
This text is highly readable, but well researched and current. Since the original edition in 1982, it has proved to meet the needs of students from community colleges to graduate school. It is comprehensive, but not overwhelming. Therefore, it has also become a resource for Head Start teachers. community day care providers and other in-service professionals. It continues to focus on child and family strengths, relationship-focused interventions, family-centered approaches, standards, evidence-based practices and coordinated, interdisciplinary services.
This text serves a wide variety of students, professionals and paraprofessionals. It has always encouraged a family-centered approach to early intervention. As a result, families have found this text to be a useful resource as they seek to foster their child’s development.
