This book was written to address the total field of group work, including how to set up and conduct the four basic types of groups — therapy, counseling, guidance, and work/task. It is a complete package on groups including the history of group work, dynamics of groups, leadership in groups, ethical issues in groups, multicultural aspects of groups, stages of group development, groups across the life span, and the theoretical basis for working with groups (10 theories covered). This text is filled with current and classic references and is packed with illustration. The author set out to write the most comprehensive and complete book on groups. Groups: A Counseling Specialty is readable and enjoyable. Readers are challenged frequently to reflect on how they would deal with specific aspects of a group and to reflect on their own experiences with groups.

  • Addition of 70 new case examples and 55 new questions from experience.
    • Readers will now be able to relate the material in this book to cases that demonstrate the principles and techniques covered. In addition, they will be able to reflect more personally on how concepts in the text relate to their lives.
  • The addition of 165 new references; deletion of 60 older references, while retaining classic sources.
    • This book is very up-to-date. It includes the best of classic research as well as the best of the new literature.
  • Inclusion of conducting groups with Arab Americans in the chapter on multicultural counseling.
    • Arab Americans are a growing and increasingly important segment of American society. Yet, they have received little attention in most counseling books and books on groups.
  • Condensing of 5 theories chapters into 4.
    • Condensing this material makes the book more compact while not deleting important information readers need to know about groups.
  • Added emphasis on the development of groups from task to psychotherapy.
    • Readers should be able to have more of an in-depth understanding of how different types of groups develop over time.
