For undergraduate/graduate courses in Advanced Composition, Professional Writing, and Advanced and Honors Freshman English.

This text prepares students for the work required of writers in a variety of discourse communities, each of which operates from distinct assumptions and within specific rhetorical and social parameters. Students are introduced to the techniques of discourse analysis, genre theory, and primary (including ethnographic) and secondary research. The text also engages students in extensive practice and a sequence of increasingly complex and comprehensive “Writer's Profiles,” ending with a researched literature review and argument. Two casebooks offer illustrative and thematically-linked readings from a wide variety of public and professional sources.

  • A broad-based sampling of professional, public, and academic genres throughout—With engaging illustrations and readings from across the curriculum for analysis, discussion, and writing practice.
    • Genres familiarize students with the work required in a range of disciplines—for example, fact sheets, newsletters, Web sites, proposals, and journal essays.

  • Genre- and theme-based “Writer's Workshops.”
    • Each chapter provides students with additional writing opportunities.

  • Introduction and application of the principles and techniques of discourse analysis.
    • Provides an accessible and flexible question-based heuristic that organizes inquiry and practice.

  • Review and in-depth coverage of core rhetorical principles.
    • Helps advanced students become more confident and effective writers, through an active critique of their undergraduate writing composing practices.

  • Emphasis on style—Introduced in Chapter 3 and then revisited in more specific contexts.
    • Considers this subject as one element among many that must be carefully considered by a practicing writer.

  • Two casebook chapters—On four provocative topics: privacy and technology; weight and body image; discrimination; and homelessness.
    • Gives students the opportunity to read and analyze thematically linked readings in several genres.

  • Review of the elements of argument.
    • Presents students with several approaches for writing professional and public arguments.

(NOTE: Each chapter begins with a Chapter Preview and includes a Writer's Workshop.)
