This very successful liberal arts mathematics textbook is a collection of “excursions” into the real-world applications of modern mathematics. The excursions are organized into four independent parts: 1) The Mathematics of Social Choice, 2) Management Science, 3) Growth and Symmetry, and 4) Statistics. Each part consists of four chapters plus a mini-excursion (new feature in 6/e). The book is written in an informal, very readable style, with pedagogical features that make the material both interesting and clear. The presentation is centered on an assortment of real-world examples and applications specifically chosen to illustrate the usefulness, relevance, and beauty of liberal arts mathematics.

Features

Approximately 250 tried and tested examples —serve to motivate the concepts that are being presented and that engage the student.

Diverse and extensive exercises

Over 1500 in total.

Exercises are divided into 3 levels of difficulty to provide instructors with greater ease and flexibility in assigning homework.

Walking: straight forward applications of the concepts discussed in the chapter.

Jogging: exercises that require extra effort and/or insight on the part of the student.

Running: exercises that really challenge the students' ability and understanding

Carefully chosen topics to motivate the math–Meet the following criteria:

Accessibility–the material does not require a heavy mathematical infrastructure.

Applicability–the presentation connects the mathematics presented and the real-life problems that motivate it.

Currency–much of the material dates within the last 100 years, and some–fractals for instance–within the last 25

Aesthetics–develops an appreciation for mathematics by combining its elegance with its simplicity.

“Projects and Papers”–Found at the end of chapter problem sets, offers topics for projects and papers appealing to instructors who want their students to do cooperative learning or research papers.

Provides a great vehicle for explorations and class discussions that students and professors can pursue together.

“Profiles”–16 biographical profiles of featured mathematicians that appear at the end of each chapter. [e.g., Kenneth Arrow (Chapter 1), Roger Penrose (Chapter 11), Benoit Mandelbrot (Chapter 12)]

Humanizes the materials in each chapter and gives a glimpse of the human aspects of mathematical discovery.

Extensive bibliographies–Accompany each chapter.

Enables student to easily pursue further study.

NEW — Mini-Excursions–These are enrichment topics that have been added at the end of each part and require an understanding of the core material covered in one or more of the chapters. Shorter than a full chapter but much more substantive than an appendix. Each mini-excursion includes its own exercise set.

Mini-Excursion 2. A Touch of Color: Graph Coloring and Matching.
Mini-Excursion 3. The Time Value of Money: Annuities.
Mini-Excursion 4. The Cost of Risk-Taking: Expected Value.

NEW — Marginal Comments–This feature includes sidebars, quotations, parenthetical remarks, and suggestions to the reader (including exercises to try at a given moment). The marginal comments are meant to further the informal conversational tone of the presentation and to reinforce the concepts being presented.
NEW -- Approximately 25% of the exercises are either new or have been updated. Many of the updated exercises include new data and have been modified to respond to reviewer suggestions.
NEW — Approximately 15% of the examples have been updated and improved. New ones include:
