This book is intended for undergraduate engineering students taking the introductory engineering economics course at the university level.
The fourth edition of Contemporary Engineering Economics has been thoroughly revised and updated while continuing to adopt a contemporary approach to the subject, and teaching, of engineering economics. This text aims not only to build a sound and comprehensive coverage of engineering economics, but also to address key educational challenges, such as student difficulty in developing the analytical skills required to make informed financial decisions.

· New chapter on Real Options Analysis (chapter 13)---provides a new perspective on how engineers should manage risk in their strategic economic decision problems. The real options approach provides a contemporary tool with engineers on how to actively manage the risk involved in the long-term project.
New chapter Economic Analysis in Service Sector (chapter 16) provides economic analysis unique to other service sectors (beyond the government sector), such as healthcare, logistics, financial, and transportation. Since more than 80% of the total GDP (Gross Domestic Products) in the U.S. is provided from the service sector, more engineers will work on various economic decision problems in the service sector.
· Three chapters have been merged with other materials in various chapters. Chapter 3 on Cost Concepts and Behaviors has been moved to Part III under the name of “Estimating Project Cost Elements” a part of project cash flow analysis. Chapter 6 on Principles of Investing becomes a part of Understanding Money and Its Management. Chapters on Depreciation and Corporate Income Taxes now become a single chapter.
· All end-of-chapter problems are revised to reflect the materials changed in the main text.
· All chapter opening stories–a trade mark of “Contemporary Engineering Economics”--have been completely replaced with more current and thought-provoking stories.
· Spreadsheets throughout the text. Various Excel spreadsheet modeling techniques are introduced throughout the chapters.
