Q: Do you believe that students digest material better in smaller "chunks" rather than in large quantities? Do you often assign only portions of chapters vs. the entire chapter? Do you teach in the exact order of the textbook or sometimes skip around and cover material "out of order"?
A: Kassin, Psychology in Modules offers the same material as Kassin 4e but in a modular format. Rather than 18 chapters, Psychology in Modules takes the same material and divides it into 50 self-contained modules (content within each modules can stand-alone and does not refer back to any other material in the text). Psychology in Modules is available in its entirety (all 50 modules) or can be customized. This approach benefits students because they are able to study a complete module in a manageable timeframe, and do the accompanying pedagogy.  Students come to class prepared! In the case of a customized book, students are assured that they have paid for only what they need.

  • Minimum number of modules per book is 25; base price of $48 net
  • Additional modules can be added to the core for $2/modules net
  • Full customized text adoption minimum of 300 copies over 2 years

HALLMARK FEATURES

Q: How do you get students engaged in the research of psychology?
A: Each section of the modular text starts with a "What's Your Prediction?" that offers a detailed account of a classic or recent study in which the student is cast in the role of the subject, experimenter or observer. By asking the students to make a prediction about the outcome of the study, students begin to think like a psychologist would. Following the detailed study, the actual research results are revealed for students to compare with their predictions. What's Your Prediction.  Mini-What's Your Predictions are contained throughout the modules to reinforce thinking like a psychologist.

  • See Consciousness, "Do Subliminal Self-Help Tapes Work?", pg. 143
  • See Social Influence, "How Far Can People Be Pushed", pg. 543
  • Mini WYP:  See Gender Differences in Big Five Personality Traits, p. 663

Q: Would you like more ways to get students to participate in the science of psychology?
A: Kassin in Modules offers several ways to encourage students to actively engage in the material presented. First, "Try This!" exercises offer step-by-step activies that enable students to demonstrate psychological phenomena firsthand, either on themselved or by recruiting friends to serve as their "subjects".  Second, each module in the text ends with a Module Review section that include a summary, key terms, Review and Critical Thinking Questions.  Kassin in Modules also offers Live!Psych experiments designed to give students additional practice with core concepts and to teach them more about the process of research methods. Live!Psych experiments are available online in Onekey or on CD-ROM.

Q: How do you get your students to connect research (both classic and contemporary) to their lives?
A: Psychology in Modules has multiple features designed to make scientific findings meaningful to the personal lives of students. "Psychology and..." boxes describe applied psychological research in areas such as health, education, law, business, and sports. . "How to..." boxes describe for students how they can use psychology to improve aspects of their own lives. "Debunking the Myth" presents popular conceptions about people, the mind, behavior, or conclusions prematurely drawn from early research for which there is no empirical support--encouraging students to reflect on and reevaluate their own theories and beliefs. Lastly, "Process of Discovery" boxes contain interviews with dozens of psychology's pioneering researchers to find out how they became interested in psychology; how they came up with their important discovery; and "what's their prediction" on where their field is headed.
