This chronologically organized text provides students with a broad overview of the field of human development–from the moment of conception through death–focusing on physical, cognitive, social and personality development. Appealing to the many different backgrounds and career goals of students, this text offers the most current, balanced coverage of theory and research–with a focus on the application of that research. Feldman's unique approach illustrates the scope and diversity of the field and capitalizes on students' inherent interest in the subject of human development by asking them to relate what they are learning to their own experience as developing humans.

HALLMARK FEATURES

Q: How do you get your students to apply the research within the course to their everyday lives?
A: "From Research to Practice" boxes in each chapter describe a current research issue in lifespan development and applies that research to an everyday problem. Also in every chapter, "Becoming an Informed Consumer of Development" boxes focus on specfic uses that can be derived from research. These features help to make research truly relevant to students. Feldman 4e includes Observation Videos packaged automatically and for FREE with every copy of the text. Q: What are the varying majors that comprise your Lifespan class (i.e. education, nursing, psychology, etc) and how do you relate the material to their career goals?
A: Many chapters in Feldman, 4e include an interview with a person working in a field that uses the findings of lifespan development. By recognizing that lifespan development is a crucial course to varying majors, Feldman 4e relates the material covered in class to student career goals outside of class.

Q: How do you incorporate diversity into the course?
A: Every chapter has at least one "Developmental Diversity" section incorporated into the text. These sections highlight issues relevant to today's multicultural society. Examples of these sections include discussions of preschools around the world, gay and lesbian relationships, the marketing of cigarettes to the less advantaged, and race, gender, and ethnic differences in life expectancy. These sections remind students of the concepts within lifespan development that both unite and diversify our global community.

Q: Do you find personal experiences and stories are an effective way to reach students?
A: Each chapter begins with a short vignette, describing an individual or situation that is relevant to the basic developmental issues being addressed in the chapter. The opening prologues are followed by "Looking Ahead" sections which recap important points from the vignette and orient readers to the topics forthcoming in the chapter. Each chapter also contains shorter vignettes interspersed within the key material. These examples of personal experiences draw students into the chapter material and shape their interest in upcoming concepts.
