A one-semester course in general psychology/introduction to psychology.

This book presents a scientific, accurate, and thorough overview of the essential concepts of psychology in engaging language that the average student can easily comprehend. It is current without being trendy; and it is written clearly without being condescending.

Q: What do you look for in a book with regards to the scientific foundation of psychology?
A: Students come into this course with a lot of preconceived ideas about what psychology is about and a key part of the introductory course is for students to understand the scientific basis of the discipline. Morris/Maisto present a scientific, accurate, and thorough overview of the essential concepts of psychology in engaging language that the average reader can easily understand. The NEW edition of Morris/Maisto has over 700 new references, most from 2003 & 2004.

Q: How do you reinforce the concepts students are studying?
A: Morris/Maisto apply psychological theory and concepts to help students better understand the material they are covering.

  • NEW Study Skills section--takes the material covered in the course and helps students improve their study habits, see "To the Student" pg. xvii-xx
  • Talking Graphics--helps students understand how the graphics relate to the material they are covering, see Figure 2-3 on pg. 45; see Figure 6-4 on pg. 196
  • Apply your Understanding--questions have been added to "Check Your Understanding" quiz section at the end of each major section to help students review and retain concepts, as well as apply what they've learned to real-life situations.
  • Live!Psych simulations and experiments--integrated into the chapter material with icons. 30+ media-rich, interactive animations, demonstrations and simulations PLUS 15 interactive media experiments give students additional practice with core concepts and teach them more about the process of research methods.

Q: How do you get students to understand how the content they are learning applies to their lives?
A: Morris/Maisto helps students think about these issues through "Understanding the World Around Us" and "Understanding Ourselves" boxed features.

Understanding the World Around Us--NEW critical thinking questions that help students use psychology to understand issues in the news and events occurring in the world around them.

  • See pg. 136, Binge Drinking on College Campuses
  • See pg.406, The Insanity Defense

Understanding Ourselves--provide practical information on how students can apply psychology to their own lives

  • See pg. 220, Becoming a More Skillful Problem Solver
  • See pg. 349, Evaluating Your Personality

Q: How do you help students to retain and recall the material covered in the course?
A: Instead of just processing lists of unrelated facts, Morris/Maisto help students to better understand the material by making the content clear and understandable. Using techniques that apply the content to student lives, Morris/Maisto make it easier for students to relate and recall the concepts covered.

This is done through the following NEW features:

  • Study Skills Section--takes the material covered in the course and helps students improve their study habits, see "To the Student" pg. xvii-xx
  • Summary tables--Added to most chapter, these tables provide a concise overview of key information, see "Rods and Cones" pg. 85
  • Apply Your Understanding questions--added at the end of every "Check Your Understanding" quiz to encourage students to use what they have just learning in order to understand real-life situations, see pgs. 202, 270, 311
  • Critical Thinking Questions--Added to the the end of every "Understanding the World Around Us" box, these questions encourage students to apply what they learned about critical thinking in Chapter 1
  • Four new chapter-opening vignettes--See Chapters 1, 12, 13 and 14. Updated material to make it as effective and timely as possible.
