Description

For undergraduate courses in Experimental Psychology, Research Methods, or Experimental Design.

This text conveys the excitement of research methodology through a lively, conversational style. To make the study of the research process interactive and accessible, student-focused features and critical thinking activities are integrated throughout the text. Actual student research appears in each chapter to increase relevance and heighten student interest.

Features

How helpful would it be to have material reorganized for your students' benefit?

NEW! One new, single chapter on internal and external validity (chapter 8). Allows students to be aware of internal and external validity issues before they encounter the chapters on research design.

NEW! Critiquing psychological research now discussed earlier, enabling students to learn how to evaluate research before they encounter more advanced topics.

How could students benefit from an emphasis on student research?

Psychologist as Detective encourages students to take their research to higher levels of professional development by showing them examples of research studies conducted by students like themselves. Student research examples are integrated throughout the text and NEW to this edition are three brief student pieces which appear in Chapter 14, "Writing and Assembling an APA-Format Research Report".

How important is it to get your students to think critically about research and research methods?

Treating research in psychology like a detective case, this text seeks to attract students to psychological research through their own inherent interest. Students are encouraged to think through a problem presented, evaluate evidence, and prepare a summary of the case (research) for consideration. When presented in this light, the research process in psychology is an interesting and stimulating endeavor for students.

Psychological Detective boxes--questions or situations posed by these sections which appear in each chapter encourage students to engage in critical thinking. They also serve as excellent stimulants for class discussions.

New To This Edition

Chapter 8 now contains information on BOTH internal and external validity. By combining this information prior to the chapter on using statistics, students will have a stronger foundation in internal and external validity issues BEFORE they encounter the chapters on research design.

Material on critiquing psychological research has been moved from Chapter 13 to Chapter 2. By placing this material earlier, students will have learned how to evaluate research before they encounter more advanced topics.

Three Brief student pieces added to Chapter 14, "Writing and Assembling an APA-Format Research Report". Covering an oral presentation, poster presentation, and the process of publishing a journal article, all three pieces are authentic student experiences with research. Appearing at the end of the book, these pieces reinforce the overall message that students can and should be taking their research results to higher levels of professional development.
