For one or two semester/quarter courses on Introduction to the Humanities or Cultural Studies.

Arts and Culture  provides an introduction to global civilizations and their artistic achievements, history, and cultures.  The authors consider two important questions:  What makes a work a masterpiece of its type? And what qualities of a work enable it to be appreciated over time? 

The Combined Volume does not contain literature selections.

How do you highlight connections between (1) the arts and ideas of a given culture, and (2) the relationships between the arts and ideas of different cultures?

• Interdisciplinary Connections boxes highlight how artists'/thinkers' ideas in one discipline affected ideas and values shaped in another.
• Cultural Cross Currents boxes- explore connections made between two cultures, focusing on sub-topics in the various disciplines and helping students engage in cross-cultural studies.
• Then & Now boxes- Helps students link things they already know with things they don't know. Draws from contemporary culture, showing students how artifacts of today's American culture have roots in past Western and non-Western civilizations alike.
• Cultural Impact boxes show students how past achievements influenced later cultures and how they still impact the contemporary world.

Expanded Coverage of Humanities from Around the Globe:

• Chapter 7 on Indian Civilization has been revised and expanded with new material.
• The former chapter on Early Chinese and Japanese Civilizations has been expanded into two new chapters:
