They serve as means of reinforcing good study habits and getting actively involved in their part of the learning process. In this 5th edition, Elayn has now added a category of Mixed Practice exercises that combine objectives within a section, and/or combine exercises from previous sections. These Mixed Practice exercises better prepare students for tests when they'll be required to determine the problem type they are being asked to sovle so they can then determine the strategy needed to solve it. Presently, Elayn provides a comprehensive review at the end of every chatper with Chapter Review exercises that are keyed to every section from the chapter. In this 5th edition, she now introduces Mixed Review exercises that are not keyed to sections. Together these new Mixed Practice and Mixed Review exercises will help your students better prepare for the types of problems they will likely see on your quizzes and tests!
- Vocabulary Exercises: Knowing that many students struggle to understand mathematics terms which can then affect their ability to understand exercises and instructions, Elayn has added Vocabulary Exercises at the beginning of most exercise sets. Assign these Vocabulary Exercises to quickly check your students' understanding of new vocabulary words so that forthcoming instructions in problem sets will be clear to them.
- Readiness Check Exercises are also introduced in this 5th edition and appear at the beginning of most exercise sets. The Readiness Check Exercises get at your student's comprehension of a concept that they'll need to truly understand before continuing with the rest of the exercise set.
- Concept Extensions (formerly Combining Concepts) and Concept Check Exercises: Elayn has revised the Combining Concepts feature from the previous edition and instead offers Concept Extension Exercises that "extend the concepts" by requiring students to combine several skills or concepts as they work towards the solution. In this 5th edition, Elayn is also introducing Concept Check Exercises. The Concept Check Exercises relate to the Concept Check(s) in the section, and help students' to better understand key concepts by having them focus on common trouble areas. For example, a student may be asked to identify a common error, and/or provide an explanation.
CONTENT CHANGES
Three key content changes help improve the coverage of the material in this 5th edition:
1. Enhanced treatment of Equation Solving:
To expose students to prealgebra topics earlier in the course, and to help them better prepare for their work with Equations and Problem Solving in Chapter 3, the idea of equation solving is now introduced in section 1.8 (Introduction to Variables, Algebraic Expressions, and Equations). In section 1.8 students determine whether a number is indeed a solution to a given equation. The idea of equation solving is then revisited in section 2.6, where students are introduced to the multiplication and addition properties of equality and solving equations requiring one applications of a property. The properties are then reviewed in section 3.2 where students solve equations requiring more than one property. This progression helps students gain greater exposure to and experience with equation solving–an essential tool for the prealgebra course and well as future courses–and helps to reduce the overlap with basic math topics thus improving student motivation.
2. To improve the pace of Chapter 1 (Whole Numbers and Introduction to Algebra), the concepts of Adding and Subtracting Whole Numbers are now covered together in one section (section 1.3) whereas they were previously covered in separate sections (setions 1.3 and 1.4).
3. To help students with the global concepts in prealgebra that they all struggle with (listed below), Elayn has added Review exercises, Mixed Practice exercises and Concept Extensions.
