How do you place the study of art history in context for your students?

How important is the text illustration program in the classroom?

• Excellent illustration program— Art History has the most comprehensive, current and color-accurate collection of reproductions available in a survey text, with nearly 1400 illustrations, over 1000 in full-color, including new line drawings and cutaways commissioned specifically for this text.

Do you look for an inclusive text?

• The contributions of diverse artists, media and subject matter is integrated into every chapter to show students the role of women in the arts.

New Content:

• Modern Art chapters have been thoroughly revised -  to include more on the historical context of artists and works.  The discussion of the definition and causes of modern art has been rewritten and expanded.  New sections on the dominant trends in Postmodernism  and on Latin America modern art have been added.

• Renaissance chapters reorganized from two to four chapters (Chapters 18-21) The two chapters formally devoted to the 15th and 16th centuries each have been divided into Italian and art outside of Italy for a total of four chapters.

• Expanded Non-Western coverage -  new contributing specialists have broadened the scope and deepened the discussion in each of the chapters devoted to art beyond the West.  Korean art has been added and the Islamic  art chapter has been thoroughly revised and updated.

How important is scholarship to you?

• NEW — Scholarship and Research - reflects trends and new discoveries impacting the field of Art History and makes this a complete and up-to-date resource for professors and students.  For example, the recently revised dates for ancient Egyptian art and the recreations of familiar masterworks, such as the new Augustus of Primaporta have been incorporated.

How do you evaluate the quality of the illustration program?

• NEW- Enhanced image program — New objects have been introduced and every reproduction in the book has been refreshed and expertly examined for fidelity to the original.  New photographs have been obtained directly from the holding institutions to ensure that we have the most accurate and authoritative illustrations.  In addition, every image that could be obtained in color has been acquired. 

• NEW- Architectural cutaway drawings and reconstructions by Dorling Kindersley - help students to better understand this challeging subject.  The line drawings show how the parts of buildings work together in a 3-dimensional representation and new reconstructions have been added, all in full color, to bring ruins to life and show students what the site originally looked like.
