<> For one-semester, undergraduate and graduate level courses in Organizational Behavior.

This brief alternative to the OB course covers all the key concepts you need, the cutting edge topics you hope for and streamlined pedagogy to allow instructors maximum flexibility in designing and shaping their courses.

What kind of text do you currently use for your OB course, a comprehensive one or a brief one?  How much of the in-text supplemental material do you find yourself using throughout the course of the semester?  How much of your current text are you able to cover in your course?

Brevity.  Since its inception in 1984, Robbins/Judge has tried diligently to keep this book in the range of 325-350 pages.  This length allows considerable flexibility in assigning supporting materials and projects at the discretion of the professor.

Streamlined Pedagogy.  R/J creates its brevity byproviding only the basic core concepts of OB and removing unnecessary review questions, cases, exercises, or similar teaching/learning aids. This allows instructors the maximum flexibility in designing and shaping their courses.

How do you balance teaching the traditional OB topics with the more cutting-edge issues facing the field today?  Where do you find yourself spending time in your course, on the more traditional topics or the more cutting edge topics such as emotions, trust, etc.?

Balanced Topic Coverage.  This book continues to provide balanced coverage of all the key concepts of OB.  This includes not only traditional topics such as personality, motivation and leadership; but also cutting-edge issues such as emotions, trust, negotiation, and knowledge management.

There is a new chapter on mood and emotions to reflect the managerial implications of cutting edge research in this area (Chapter 7, pp. 118-122).  And updated research on personality, including the “Big Five” personality traits (Chapter 3, p. 35).

How do you cover the topics of globalization, diversity and ethics in your course?

Integration of globalization, diversity and ethics.  The topics of globalization and cross-cultural differences, diversity, and ethics are integrated throughout.  Rather than being presented in stand-alone chapters, these topics have been woven into the context of relevant issues.  This makes these topics more fully a part of OB and reinforces their importance.

  • Examples: p. 40 Personality and National Culture; p. 86, Caveat Emptor: Motivation Theories Are Often Culture Bound

How do you incorporate OB theory with OB practice?  How do you get your students to see how OB is USED in the business world?

Practicality.  This book has never been solely about theory. There is a strong focus on making sure that readers see the link between OB theories, research, and implications for practice. It’s about using theory to better explain and predict the behavior of people in organizations.

Other Points of Distinction

What materials do you use to support your text book?  What supplements do you use on a daily basis for your OB course?

Comprehensive supplements.  While this book may be short in length, it’s not short on supplements.  It comes with a complete, high-tech support package for both faculty and students.  This includes a comprehensive instructor’s manual and Test Item File; a dedicated website (www.prenhall.com/robbins); an Instructor’s Resource CD-ROM, including the computerized Test Item File, instructor’s manual, and PowerPoint slides; and the Self-Assessment Library, which provides students with insights into their skills, abilities, and interests.

What type of writing style would you like your OB book to have to grab your students attention and bring them into the subject matter?

Writing Style.  This book is frequently singled out for the fluid writing style and extensive use of examples.  Users regularly say that they find this book “conversational,” “interesting,” “student friendly,” and “very clear and understandable.” This allows students to easily relate to and understand the material.

This ninth edition has been updated in terms of research, examples, and topic coverage. New material in this edition includes:

How do you incorporate newer OB topics like mood, emotions, and personality into your course?

A new chapter on mood and emotions reflects the managerial implications of cutting edge research in this area (Chapter 7, p. 107-122).  Updated research on personality, including the “Big Five” personality traits is now found in Chapter 3 (p. 35).  Coverage of “emotional labor” and how employees and managers can better manage their and others’ emotions in the workplace is found in Chapter 7 (p. 115).

How important are the latest leadership theories to your OB course?

Significantly expanded treatment of the “hottest” theory in leadership research — transformational/charismatic leadership — shows students what organizations can do to improve leadership

·         See Chapter 11, p. 186-192

How do you introduce the cutting edge issues facing organizations today such as telecommuting and virtual organizations?

More material on job design (p. 89-97) and telecommuting (p. 94-97) is included which continue to be “cutting edge” issues for organizations today (Chapter 6).  Updated material has been added on the virtual organization (p. 240-242), which continues to evolve with ever-changing information technology (Chapter 14).

Other New Features

The latest research on communication barriers between men and women, and across cultures has been added (Chapter 10, p. 158-174)

The latest research on conflict and negotiation has been included, which suggests many practical ways that individuals can improve their ability to resolve conflicts and better negotiate desired outcomes (Chapter 13, p. 211-228).

Increased coverage on how to create an ethical culture has been added in Chapter 15, p. 259-260.

New research on influence tactics (p. 200), which suggests that the most widely used ways of influencing people are the least effective in organizations is now found in Chapter 12.

More material on barriers to change and how to overcome them is included in Chapter 16, p. 264-280.

New research on work stress (p. 275-276) has been added which shows that not all stress is bad (Chapter 16).

New research on managerial decision-making and what we can do to avoid decision-making errors and biases is now included in Chapter 4 (p. 51-68).

Expansion of material on goal-setting theory, which has been argued to be the most practically useful motivation theory ever is now found in Chapter 5, p. 76-77.

Some of the latest research on group behavior, including research showing the “dark side” of groups has been added to Chapter 8, p. 123-139.

New research on how to compose the best work teams is now found in Chapter 9, p. 145-156.
