For courses in Medical Ethics, Biomedical Ethics, Healthcare Ethics, or Applied Ethics.

Argument-based in style and tone, this “cutting edge” anthology explores important ethical issues that arise in the health care professions. Exceptionally contemporary in both topic choice and currency of articles, it explores such areas as the Hippocratic Oath; Paternalism and Autonomy; Privacy and Confidentiality; Informed Consent; Gender Issues; Genetic Engineering; Euthanasia; Abortion; and Healthcare Policy in the United States (with regard to the “right” to healthcare and to the allocation of transplants). It features unique first-person interviews with prominent practitioners in biomedicine, case studies from both the administrative and “front-line” perspectives, and a worldview methodology for linking theory to action.

  • An “argument based” style and tone.
    • Provides the basis for lively class discussions and challenges students to think about some of the various implications that the acceptance of ethical theories will entail.

  • Ethical theory within the context of a worldview—Shows that one's worldview and its relation to the common worldview (the worldview created by a particular community) is a crucial element in explaining and justifying one's choices of ethical value.
    • Gives students one initial critical screen (The Personal Worldview Imperative) through which to study the major ethical theories.

  • A methodology for linking theory to action—Offers a focused discussion, using the worldview methodology, on issues concerning the Profession of Medicine. Emphasizes logical argument and a holistic understanding of the agent (male, female, black, white, or otherwise).
    • Shows students the relationship between ethical theory and its implementation in practice.

  • A major emphasis upon gender issues in healthcare—Devotes a whole section to the topic and features additional articles on nursing problems and issues of particular concern to women—e.g., whether biomedical research adequately takes into account the perspectives of women.
    • Makes students aware of gender issues as they relate to biomedicine.

  • Unique, original first-person interviews with prominent practitioners in biomedicine—Ch. 2 features an interview with Edmund Pellegrino, one of the most prominent figures in biomedical ethics (former head of the Yale Medical School, former President of Catholic University, and founder of Georgetown's Kennedy Institute of Ethics). Dr. Pellegrino gives some of his reactions to the major themes discussed in the text along with major themes he has developed over the years. Ch. 6 contains an interview with Kevin Brown, a top researcher and visiting scientist at N.I.H. who is working at the frontiers of gene therapy and genetic vectors. Dr. Brown reviews key issues that occur in the readings and offers his own insights from his state-of-the-art work in the field.
    • Gives students the opportunity to explore cutting-edge issues in a personal, one-on-one manner with individuals at the forefront of those issues, and, in so doing, makes what are at first abstract concepts real, immediate, and relevant to students' own lives.

  • An original article by Deryck Beyleveld and Shawn Pattinson—Written specifically for this volume. Dr. Beyleveld is the head of a prominent bioethics institute at the University of Sheffield and organizer of a recent EU conference on bioethics. The essay discusses creating a linking principle (precautionary reasoning) between normative theory and application.
    • Introduces students to serious theoretical debate in bioethics.

  • A unique series of “macro/micro perspective” case studies—Linked to the readings. The macro cases take the point of view of someone in a biomedical or laboratory administrative, managerial, or supervisory role, and looks at medical ethics from a systemic perspective. The micro cases take the point of view of a person on the “frontlines” of medicine—e.g., the physician, nurse, or other health care professional who deals directly with patients and is faced with decisions that have ethical implications.
    • Lets students experience “first-hand” what it's like to be an actual practitioner in the field who faces, and has faced, these dilemmas everyday.

  • A series of chapter-end essays on how to write a case study—Integrates aspects of theory into the resolution of critical ethical problems. Leads students step- by-step in the process of writing an effective case study evaluation using the ethical theory and worldview of their choice. Gives directions on how to choose an ethical theory.
    • Provides students with an apparatus by which they can make the link between theory and action, and gives them the opportunity to react to the readings and test their own attitudes through writing an essay.
