This item has been replaced by Laboratory Studies of Vertebrate and Invertebrate Embryos: Guide and Atlas of Descriptive and Experimental Development, 9/E.

For upper-level undergraduate/graduate-level courses in Developmental Biology, Embryology, Cell and Developmental Biology in Biology, Zoology, and Cell/Developmental Biology departments.

Laboratory Studies is the most comprehensive laboratory guide available in the field of developmental biology and embryology, and is written to allow students to study material independently—without the need for supplemental materials. It is the only text/manual to integrate a laboratory—combining descriptive and experimental studies on living embryos—with a complete atlas of embryonic development viewed from the most technologically enhanced viewpoints. It features broad coverage (sea urchin, frog, chick, mouse, and pig—all popular educational and research models) and is the only guide to provide detailed descriptions of a wide-range of developing stages.

  • NEW - Reorganized into 6 chapters—Chs. 1-5 each cover a particular organism; Ch. 6 consists of all the experimental exercises on the covered organisms as well as advanced hands-on studies.
    • Simplifies the flow from organism to organism. Ex.___

  • NEW - Improved and reorganized illustration program—Illustrations and photos from each chapter are now grouped together within the relevant chapter, rather than at the back of the book.
    • Improves quality, clarity, ascetics, and ease of viewing, and helps students find and learn the material quicker. Ex.___

  • NEW - New chapter on the development of the mouse embryo (Ch. 4)—Includes many outstanding scanning electron micrographs, photographs, line drawings, and experimental exercises.
    • With the advent of modern techniques in molecular genetics in whole-embryo culture, and techniques of experimental embryology, the mouse embryo has become an important model system for analyzing development. Ex.___

  • NEW - Over 100 high-quality additional photos—Many scanning electron micrographs.
    • Increases the visual impact and depth of the manual. Scanning electron micrographs help students with three-dimensional visualization. Ex.___

  • NEW - Seven new advanced hands-on studies—Covers the cutting of frozen sections, in situ hybridization, chick new whole-embryo culture, dye injections for tracking cell movements, BrdU labeling to study cell proliferation, TUNEL labeling to study cell death (apoptosis), and mouse whole-embryo culture.
    • Gives students the opportunity for exploring more complex topics using more sophisticated techniques. Ex.___

  • NEW - A glossary—Added as part of the Index.
    • Helps students find definitions quickly, facilitating their learning of important terms and concepts. Ex.___

  • A comprehensive laboratory guide of embryonic structure—Ideal for studying several types of embryos (vertebrate and invertebrate) at various stages—e.g., includes a complete description of chick development (Ch. 3) from the time the egg is produced (i.e., oogenesis) through three days of development, when all major intraembryonic and extraembryonic structures have formed.
    • Students can learn embryonic morphology independently—without reference to other materials. Instructors' time can be used more efficiently to answer students' questions and to provide more information on the underlying mechanisms of development. Ex.___

  • A series of detailed exercises—Contains 22 exercises for studying living embryos and 9 additional exercises for advanced hands-on studies. Includes detailed instructions and lists of materials required. Features experiments that are relatively simple to conduct, insuring good student success, and providing a springboard for independent study projects.
    • Offers students hands-on experience working with living embryos, while building their experimental design and data interpretation skills—giving them direct experience in what developmental biologists “do for a living.” Ex.___

  • Broad, comprehensive coverage of both vertebrate and invertebrate embryos—Focuses on the types of embryos and stages of embryos used in most research laboratories of developmental biology (sea urchin, frog, chick, mouse, and pig embryos). These organisms represent a wide diversity of developmental paradigms and strategies, providing understanding of developmental processes and insight into evolution.
    • Students need to be exposed to both vertebrate and invertebrate embryos to understand developmental biology. Ex.___

  • Reorganized into 6 chapters—Chs. 1-5 each cover a particular organism; Ch. 6 consists of all the experimental exercises on the covered organisms as well as advanced hands-on studies.

DR. GARY C. SCHOENWOLF is a professor in the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy at the University of Utah School of Medicine, where he teaches students at the undergraduate through postdoctoral levels. Author of well over 100 articles, his current research focuses on cell—cell signaling during early patterning of the vertebrate embryo. He and his wife Pat have two children, Jennifer and Gregory.

The eighth edition of this widely respected volume continues the tradition of introducing laboratory studies of developmental biology with its broad coverage, copious illustrations and detailed descriptions of a wide range of developing stages. Unique in its combination of a detailed atlas with interesting exercises on living embryos, it also contains complete instructions for additional experimental studies that include state-of-the-art research approaches. The eighth edition adds a new chapter on the development of the mouse embryo, many new illustrations, seven new advanced hands-on studies and a glossary.
