Phyllis Davis is a graphics and Web designer, teacher, and software developer who has written a number of Visual QuickStart Guides, including one on WordPerfect 8 for Linux, three on CorelDRAW (for versions 9 and 8 for Windows and 7 for Windows 95/NT), and two on FrontPage for Windows. She also wrote Peter Norton's Guide to Visual Basic.

The GIMP is the digital image manipulation application for Linux/Unix. But with its extensive set of professional tools, the GIMP can be daunting for beginners. The GIMP for Linux and Unix: Visual QuickStart Guide is an easy-to-use, how-to guide to basic photo editing, manipulation, and correction techniques that will have you up and running in no time.

With this guide, you don't need to wade through menus or lengthy explanations; concise, step-by-step instructions and pictures walk you through each task. Novices can start at the beginning and work their way from basic topics--including selections, color and tonal adjustment, and blending modes--to advanced features such as creating animations for the Web. Those familiar with the GIMP can use this book as a handy quick reference and a source of new tips and techniques.
