This intermediate algebra text was developed in the spirit of the AMATYC standards for problem-solving, modeling, connecting with other disciplines, technology, and calculus reform. Many traditional topics are included in the text, but the development and application of these topics is not traditional. This book allow students to take an active role in the learning process through collaborative learning techniques, hands-on activities, and use of the graphing calculator as a problem-solving tool. Geometric examples and problems are integrated throughout the text. Students explore topics through various activities and use calculator based laboratory (CBL) experiments to generate data describing real-world situations and applications.

Hands-on activities help students conceptualize and visualize the mathematical concepts they are studying. This enhances student comprehension of key concepts and skills.

Collaborative exercises allow students to play an active role in their learning process through group discussions and discovery learning. These exercises enhance students' communication, organizational, and social skills.

Multiple approaches to solving problems are provided within this text to assist students with their understanding of the material and visualization of the concepts presented.

Real-world applications within this text provide students with a motivating look at how mathematics is used outside the classroom in a variety of professions.

You Try It exercises provide students with an opportunity to discover any misunderstandings or difficulties they may have with the current topic before leaving the classroom. This serves students as an important self-assessment tool to help solidify their understanding of important concepts and skills.

End-of-unit practice problems help students enhance their understanding of the mathematical material and apply the concepts they have learned to different problem situations.

Technology is integrated throughout, using the TI-83 graphing calculator. This not only helps students raise their comfort level with technology, but also provides an important leaning tool which enhances student visualization and comprehension of mathematical concepts.

AMATYC standards serve as the foundation for the development of this text. The text mirrors the AMATYC standards for problem-solving, modeling, connecting with other disciplines, and technology. This allows the text to take a student focus in making the math relevant and understandable to its users.

Less is best approach of the text focuses on essential topics within the course.

Student skill development, such as creativity, flexibility, and innovation are enhanced with this text, which are often needed in today's work environment.
