Twenty-four free-standing chapters were written by a multidisciplinary group of authors, who are recognized experts in their respective areas.

  • Five new case studies, presented in chapters 10, 11, 12, 16 and 17, demonstrate medical and audiological findings in a practical and easily understood style.
  • Charles I. Berlin's classic “Programmed Learning on the Decibel” has been included in an expanded form as an Appendix. Over the years this has proven effective for both students and faculty as they review this extremely complex unit of measurement.

  • A new chapter (Ch. 24) on aural rehabilitation presents increased coverage of the non-medical management of people with hearing disorders. This final chapter completes the scope of the book by extending from the medical aspects of hearing loss to the management aspects of hearing disorders.
  • A discussion of leading-edge techniques has been added, including coverage of otoacoustic emission measurement (Ch. 5), MRI X-rays (Ch. 7), and cochlear implants (Ch. 22).
