This highly praised new text provides superior coverage of IR history, focuses on the changing nature of foreign policy challenges, and ends with a unique "Regional Applications" section that drives home the regional nature of IR today.

Written in the belief that students need to know the Cold War legacy of international relations in order ro truly understand present and future IR issues, Hastedt and Knickrehm's new text provides a historical perspective and examines how foreign policy challenges have and continue to change. The book's theme of “A Changing World” focuses on the differences between Cold War policy and post-Cold War policy as an intuitive framework for better understanding the IR issues confronting us at the beginning of the 21st century. Because so many IR issues in today's world are regional in nature, a unique Regional Applications ends the text, providing a series of chapters on various regions that will help students understand key actors and potential flashpoints of politics in the 21st Century.

  • Companion Website (www.ablongman.com.hastedt). This robust and easy-to-use text-specific resource will engage students in the course material and help them to get better grades. For students: Interactive Practice Tests, Web Links, Summaries, and more. For instructors: downloadable graphics from the text, Web links, and teaching suggestions.
  • “Documenting History” boxes. Presenting actual government documents, these boxes give students a real world look at how IR has changed over time. Get students accustomed to reading and analyzing primary sources documents, and give them the opportunity to apply what they've learned to concrete examples. Topics include: CIA intelligence estimates, Pentagon papers on Vietnam, presidential statements on the Persian Gulf War, and excerpts from the UN charter.
  • Abundance of case studies. These in-depth case studies appear throughout the text, engaging student's critical thinking skills and enabling them to apply concepts to real-world situations.
  • Unique “Regional Applications” section. This series of chapters drives home and makes concrete the increasingly regional focus of world politics today. In this section, students are introduced to the geopolitics, flashpoints, and architecture of a particular region, and are given an in-depth examination of a specific issue.
  • Four-Color Design. Hastedt & Knickrehm features a full-color design, making the text lively and inviting for students.
  • An abundance of maps and photographs. Photographs throughout the book visually reinforce main concepts and a superior map program aids today's students with critical geographic skills.
  • Key terms in margins help students understand terms as they come across them and help them to easily identify main concepts.

Each chapter ends with “Conclusion.”
