Distinguishing Words offers a unique alternative to traditional vocabulary texts by approaching vocabulary acquisition through the study of synonym groups, rather than through Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

By learning new vocabulary through the study of synonym groups, students relate new words to a centrally shared meaning, learn the definition of each individual word in the group, and compare meaning between the words. This approach allows students to distinguish between words to make critical, correct vocabulary choices whenever they speak, read, or write.

Each chapter presents a list of synonymous nouns, adjectives, and verbs as new words for study. Utilizing lessons, exercises, readings, and discussion and writing questions, Distinguishing Words gives students the tools they need to not only sharpen their vocabularies but also to decipher shades of meaning.

  • Study of words through synonym groups allows students to form essential word associations and facilitates the acquisition of an enhanced vocabulary. A simplified pronunciation guide and an explanation of the group's shared meaning accompany each synonym group.
  • Word definitions are presented individually within each synonym group, distinguishing its meaning and usage from the other synonyms. Each definition includes examples and the word's etymology to reinforce basic meaning and to aid learning.
  • “Tip” boxes, where applicable, provide important explanations of the nuances in meaning and conventions of use.
  • Chapter review exercises—Immediately following the introduction to each synonym group are two sets of exercises that help students reflect upon and effectively learn the meanings of each of the words in that group. “Reading the New Words” and “For Discussion and Writing”—conclude each chapter and help reinforce students' knowledge and understanding of the vocabulary words learned throughout the lesson.
  • “More on Words” boxes appear throughout the lessons to provide additional information.
  • An index of the words included in the text acts as a quick reference and resource for review.
  • “For Further Study”—the final unit of the text—provides additional supporting material, including a brief history of the English language and a list of common Latin and Greek roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

Each chapter includes “Practice Exercises,” “Reading the New Words,” “Activities for Discussion,” “Activities for Writing,” and “Review.”
