A truly global, multicultural, and cross-cultural reader, One World, Many Cultures features 60 selections by major authors from 31 countries.

The readings explore cultural differences in relation to race, class, gender, region, and nation, challenging students to compare their experiences with the experiences of others in radically different cultural circumstances. Eight thematic chapters explore cultural perspectives on human experiences around the globe: family life, adolescent relationships, gender roles, work, conflicts of class and race, the struggles of individuals against governments, the immigrant experience, and a new chapter on social customs, rituals, and sports.

  • 16 short stories are integrated with 44 non-fiction selections, including diaries, essays, interviews, autobiographies, memoirs, and speeches.
  • The Introduction teaches critical reading, including the reading journal, and reprints a sample professional essay for students to annotate, Edward T. Hall's Hidden Culture.
  • Extensive apparatus includes chapter introductions, biographical sketches, end-of-selection questions, and end-of-chapter questions, many of which make connections between selections.
  • A rich sampling of accounts by writers who are native to the cultures they describe allows students to "hear" authentic voices rather than filtered journalistic reports.
  • Includes a rhetorical table of contents, a geographical index, a pronunciation guide, and a map of the world identifying countries mentioned in the selections.

  • 34 selections are new to this edition, many of them not previously anthologized.
  • New Chapter 8, “Customs, Rituals, and Sports” extends the analysis of cultural differences into areas shared by all societies.
  • 8 new short works of fiction represent a variety of cultural backgrounds and literary styles, from realism (Mahasweta Devi in India) to “hyperfiction” (Milorad Pavic in Serbia).
  • A revised Instructor's Manual offers teaching suggestions for each selection, plus a new guide to teaching short works of fiction and an up-to-date listing of additional resources, including websites and films.

* Denotes selections new to this edition. All chapters conclude with “Connecting Cultures” sections.
