Grounded in the practices of ethical deliberation and civic action, this text creates a resource for helping technical and professional communication students and teachers implement service-learning projects in campus and larger communities.

Designed for a wide-ranging audience, Service-Learning in Technical and Professional Communication address both advanced and beginning students and both veteran service-learning teachers and those trying it for the first time.

The text begins with three chapters that define and explain the authors' approach to service-learning and develop a rhetorical toolbox for implementing this approach. The remainder of the book is loosely organized around the process of developing, executing, and evaluating service-learning projects. These “process” chapters teach rhetorical strategies, ethical concerns, genre conventions, and style principles in an integrated, contextualized way. Discussions of rhetoric and ethics are supplemented with heuristics for analyzing the larger cultural effects of service-learning projects.

  • Provides students and instructors with guidance and problem-solving tips about managing each phase of the service-learning project.
  • Each chapter focuses on a particular genre that helps students manage their project. These common genres of technical and professional writing are discussed in terms of student projects and other workplace examples to give students a broader understanding of their functions.
  • Includes an enormous range of major and supplementary assignments throughout. Usually collaborative, and often requiring library or Web research, these provide a strong sense of the range of technical and professional communication tasks that can be incorporated into service-learning projects and provide examples of other instructors' experiences with service-learning.
  • “Other Voices” and “Student Voice” sidebars throughout the book include short narratives and insights from students, teachers, and agency sponsors with whom the authors have worked in service-learning projects, enhancing the examples and advice in the text.
  • Sample student projects in the book's appendices illustrate the authors' approach in action. The projects were completed by students in undergraduate and graduate technical and professional writing courses in regular semesters and in condensed summer terms. Each project includes some of the “process” assignments, such as the proposal and evaluation report, as well as part of the final project the students produced for the agency.
