A straightforward, engaging, and relevant analytical examination of the criminal investigation process and the role of evidence in this process, this text provides a substantial and necessary foundation on which students can base an understanding of the criminal investigation process.

Criminal Investigation: An Analytical Perspective is based on the fundamental premise that students must be able to think critically about the problems and processes of criminal investigation. While other texts provide "how-to" information about criminal investigation, Brandl emphasizes an analytical approach that teaches future law enforcement agents to think critically about what they will be doing—a skill that, according to recent research, many police chiefs feel is lacking in new recruits from college programs. Brandl believes that extensive training in how to perform criminal investigation is more appropriately left to police departments, who can train new officers according to their specific policies and requirements.

One reviewer writes, “The textbook was well-written, detailed, and very interesting to read. Indeed, fascinating at times. It is a welcome change from the typical criminal investigation textbook.”

  • Includes detailed discussions regarding the efficacy of various forms of evidence in establishing proof.
  • Presents information on and evaluation of proper procedures in collecting critical evidence, procedures beyond the collection of physical evidence.
  • Detailed case studies at the beginning of each chapter can be used to (a) analyze how evidence is (or can be) used to establish proof and (b) evaluate investigative procedures. Case studies include the Washington, D.C. sniper case, the murder of Jon Benet Ramsey, the investigation into the September 11th, 2001 terrorist acts, the Unabomber case, the Lindbergh baby kidnapping, and the O.J. Simpson case.

    • Covers topics rarely seen in a criminal investigation text like Uniformed Division of the U.S. Secret Service (Ch. 1), Cold Case Squads, Hot Spot Patrols, Differential Police Reponses, and Victimology issues (Ch. 3).

    • Includes an in-depth review of cases that impact the police and established police procedures in operations and criminal investigation (Ch. 5).

    • Features separate chapters on Interviews (Ch. 7) and Interrogations (Ch. 8) that help students understand the difference between these often-confused topics.

    • Devotes individual chapters to issues of violent crimes (Ch. 11) and property and other crimes (Ch. 12).

  • Internet sites at the end of the chapters direct students to reliable sources for additional information about a variety of topics and will assist students in research projects.

“Several recent studies show that police chiefs think that new recruits who come out of college programs do not have the critical thinking skills that they reasonably should have as a result of their college experience. College students should be able to think, and think critically, about important issues and problems in criminal justice and, in particular, criminal investigation. Police work and criminal investigations are more complicated now than ever. The work requires that individuals have a solid understanding of what it is that they are expected to do, and the problems and pitfalls with this work. In particular, individuals who enter police work should have a critical understanding of evidence, the strengths and weaknesses of different forms of evidence, and how different types of evidence can be used to establish proof. This knowledge represents a necessary foundation for the study of criminal evidence and investigation, and they can get this knowledge from my book.” -Steven G. Brandl
