Description

This introductory text, written from a conflict perspective, emphasizes four themes: diversity, the struggle to achieve social justice, economic and global transformations in the U.S., and a global perspective.

In Conflict and Order studies the forces that lead to both stability and change in society. As they examine the standard topics in an introductory course, the authors show how social problems are structural in origin. While the pace of social change is increasing, society's institutions are resistant to change. Eitzen and Baca Zinn challenge students to develop a sociological perspective by questioning their own basic beliefs, and to debate the facts rather than merely accepting the authors' way of looking at the world.

Features

  • Existing social structures are examined sympathetically for the stability they provide.
  • An overall conflict perspective, on the other hand, looks at social structures as the source of social problems.
  • Race, class, and gender are examined throughout to further enhance understanding of inequality and injustice.
  • Chapter 18 and“Human Agency” boxes throughout the text show how individuals and groups can become empowered to achieve positive social change.
  • “Globalization” boxes present examples of the consequences of the world's increasing interdependence.
  • “Diversity” boxes address tolerance and understanding of a wide range of groups, institutions, choices and behaviors.
  • “A Closer Look” boxes elaborate on specific topics in detail, including “Learning to Hate” (Ch. 5); “The Internet and the Shrinking Zone of Privacy” (Ch. 6); “Welfare Reform, Work, and Families” (Ch. 15) and “Winning Civil Rights for People with Disabilities” (Ch. 18).
  • “Research Methods” boxes explore different stages and facets of the research process in the social sciences.

New To This Edition

  • New “Globalization” boxes focus on the processes by which the worlds' peoples become increasingly interconnected economically, politically, culturally, and environmentally.
  • New lists of annotated websites at the end of each chapter direct students to relevant online source material.
  • Updated examples and statistics throughout reflect the latest research in the aging of society; inequities in both national and international distribution of wealth; the cost of education; societal reaction to gay marriages; family size versus earning capacity; the growth of families headed by women; the success of Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993; school vouchers; and the feminization of poverty.
  • New topics include—
    • The increasing dominance of the English language worldwide (Ch. 3).

    • Government surveillance and the history of government repression of dissent, both before and after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 (Ch. 6).

    • Who marked more than one race on the 2000 U.S. Census? (Ch. 7).

    • United States companies outsourcing work to other countries where labor and production are less expensive (Ch. 8).

    • Corporate malfeasance and other ethical breaches on the part of corporations such as Boeing, Enron, Worldcom, KMart, Tyco and General Electric (Chs. 8, 13 & 14).

    • Gender gaps in technology: why fewer high school girls than boys enroll in computer classes (Ch. 12).

    • Low-paid, non-unionized workers as the fastest growing labor market sector (Ch. 13).

    • Importance of standardizing education funding and teacher training before standardizing tests for students (Ch. 16).

    • The globalization of the world's major religions and the growth of Islam in the United States (Ch. 17).
