This reader is useful as a supplement to a personality textbook or as a stand-alone course book.   Students hear the voices of important theorists in their own words with introductions providing context and critical thinking questions to improve understanding.

  • Selections are organized into 9 Units, grouped by theoretical perspective
  • The authors have selected articles and excerpts that give the student a taste of the perspective offered by key theorists from the major traditions. More basically, the selections provide a set of answers to the question, What does it mean to be a person? The Personality Reader can thus be used in a wide variety of courses.
  • Each selection begins with a brief description of the author and the author’s theoretical perspective, and provides some context for the specific work to follow.
  • Each selection is followed by a set of “questions to think about” that students can use to improve their understanding of the reading.

  • The reader includes 49 selections, 19 of them new to the second edition. The selections span over 100 years of the important contributions to the field of personality.
