Description

Now more than ever, the populations social workers must be trained to work with represent the broadest spectrum of humanity – in ethnicity, culture, race, religion, worldview, gender, sexual orientation, ability, and in life experiences.

This text will prepare students to work with any population they will encounter in their professional career.   It's divided into 3 parts-Unit 1 covers social work processes, Unit 2 contains student case examples, and unit 3 contains student exercises.

Features

  • Provides a comparative understanding of terminology, practice frameworks and practice models. (Unit 1) This encourages critical thinking, enables students to make reasoned analyses and choose a methodology that is congruent with their practice methods and populations.
  • Uses the Social Work Processes as a framework within which to consider cultural competence. (Explained in Unit I Section V, supported by case examples in Unit II, and assigned exercises in all Units) Supports and encourages thinking within the social work context of processes, and the development of process specific cultural competence.
  • Includes student projects which highlight cultural diversity not only among populations, but among social workers themselves ( Unit II). Students are able to explore differences from a variety of perspectives – not only in terms of different client populations, but in terms of how students from diverse backgrounds learn about, interact with, and develop competence with the same populations. (eg: cultural competence with African-Americans as developed by a Latina and by a Jewish male social work student)
  • Includes populations/issues which are currently in the news and relevant to our society, such as Iranian-Americans, transgendered people, undocumented immigrants, homeless people, people with disabilities, and veterans.   (Unit II)
  • Includes frameworks and models with which students are familiar from practice classes. (Section IV)
  • Reinforces previous learning, encourages integration of practice knowledge and diversity competence.
