Description

Real People, Real Classrooms, Real Research.

In the second edition of Marilyn Friend’s introductory special education text, the emphasis is on contemporary concepts and evidence-based practices that prepare teachers for their evolving role in the education and well-being of students with disabilities and other special needs.

Informed by her years of experience working with students with disabilities and their teachers, this trusted author combines research-informed concepts and skills with practical information for educators working in this challenging age of high standards and accountability, curriculum access, inclusive practices, professional collaboration, student diversity, and legislative change. The second edition fully reflects NCLB and IDEA 2004 legislation and regulations so that readers understand the most recent expectations for professional educators and their students.  Throughout the book, the author grounds the discussion in the realities of today’s classrooms in a way that is concrete and compelling to future teachers.  The text strikes a careful balance between the immediate concerns of novice educators with the broader human needs and experiences of students with exceptionalities and their families.

Reviews

"I sat down with the Friend text after receiving it for the first time and read a chapter from the first page to the last, almost like reading a novel. This motivated me to make a text change almost immediately."

Theresa Pedersen,

Northern Illinois University

“The chapter on collaboration is an excellent addition that most texts of this type do not include.  I know this is an area of specialization for Dr. Friend, and I believe it is a unique, positive feature of this text.  None of the introductory texts I’ve looked at have had such a thorough introduction to this topic.”

Cynthia Herr,

University of Oregon

“…The BEST chapter on Hearing Impairments that I have ever read.  This chapter would convince me to adopt this book.  Well done.”

Pamela Brillante,

William Paterson University

"...the opening stories set the tone for the entire chapter.  These stories are the best... I look forward to thse as a lead into each section.  They make the text come alive!"

Kathryn A. Lund,

Arizona State University

"The students commented that it is well-written, and one of the best textbooks they have read.  [...]Often students sell their books as soon as the class is finished. Many of the students voiced that they would be keeping this book since it provided a wealth of knowledge—a book to use as they entered the classroom."

Marty Boman,

Western Kentucky University

“I like the balance Marilyn achieves between professional delivery and family need.  This degree of collaboration is long overdue and is welcomed.  The features associated with the chapter compliment the text, but do not overwhelm the reader.”

James A. Siders,

The University of Alabama

“…a text that I would be very interested in adopting for our class.  The primary reason relates to the focus on the “new” role of special education teachers that is evolving from the NCLB Act and is anticipated from the re-authorization of IDEA.  This is new territory and I appreciate the author going into it.”

Philip Lee Gunter,

Valdosta State University

“This will be my text of choice when I next teach the Intro to Special Ed course. I like the content, the format, and the features.”

Mary Bierne-Smith,

The University of Alabama

“I would like to commend Prof. Friend on her thorough presentation of the many issues and challenges faced by teachers of children with special needs. […]  I recommend this book to all who are committed to providing quality education to all populations.”

Deena K Bernstein,

LehmanCollege / CUNY
