Voices of the American South is a comprehensive survey of pivotal works in the Southern literary tradition.

This text's chronlogical organization, lively and contextualized introductions and headnotes, and clustered selections inform students about relevant themes of Southern literature while providing the historically uninformed student with interesting entry points into the uniquely fascinating literature of the South.

  • Conceptual framework. The selections are organized into six significant periods in the South's history: the Antebellum period, Civil War / Reconstruction Years, Rebuilding after Reconstruction, Southern Renascence, Civil Rights, and the Contemporary Era. This organization enables students to read each selection within its historical and cultural context while providing students with a framework in which to compare and contrast works within and across periods.
  • Diversity of selections. The selections include canonical Southern writers as well as writers underrepresented in other Southern literature anthologies. The contemporary section, Part Six, is particularly diverse, including many selections written by women and ethnic minorities as well as selections that portray diverse characters, settings, and communities.
  • Introductions. Each of the six major sections includes a comprehensive introduction to the era that lends historical and cultural context to the works that follow.
  • “Voices in Context.” These clusters of readings showcase pivotal events or characteristics of the Southern literary tradition such as Confederate women's diaries, the legends of Huey Long, religion and the Southern experience, and proleterian writers of the South.
  • Maps of the Southern region illustrate the development from the colonial era through Reconstruction. Later maps demonstrate some of the major sociological phenomena in the region.
  • Headnotes. Each selection is introduced by a headnote, and each reading concludes with two or three discussion questions to help guide students' reading.
  • Timelines. Located at the beginning of each section, timelines with small illustrations give students a visual representation of the major happenings of the era.
