Working from the popular notion of “cool,” this innovative text challenges students to think and write critically about how popular culture terms and phenomena are constructed.

Ideal for instructors interested in integrating cultural studies and technology into their classrooms, this text examines the popular notion of “cool” as a means of understanding the cultural dimensions of electronic writing as well as the rhetorical strategies implicit in such writing. By providing content-specific assignments to be created in HTML, the textbook merges the subject of cool with technology-based writing instruction.

Students are encouraged to think critically about the construction of popular culture and taught how to write critically about various popular culture phenomenon. Through the study of Web, advertising, literature, and technology usages of cool, students learn how to use HTML to write “cool” themselves.

  • Provides coverage of “cool”as a cultural construction, explaining how terms are racial and gendered constructions as well as how such terms determine cultural attitudes; students learn how to turn such ideas into writing approaches.
  • Presents a detailed analysis of websites, aiding students in understanding why certain words become dominant on the Internet.
  • Each chapter details a media approach to “cool” and asks students how particular media forms can serve as models for writing “cool.”
  • Offers rhetorical analysis of specific advertising campaigns, teaching students how advertising may build off of popular assumptions about language and how to respond to advertising using the media's own rhetorical approaches.
  • Discusses literary analysis, examining how to use literature to understand cultural issues and how to use these works' rhetorical approaches in students' own writing.
  • Features technology analysis, discussing the complex roles technology plays in our culture, and teaching students to apply these ideas to their electronic writing.
  • Photographs throughout the text, chapter introductions, correlated readings, boxed material, and exercises following each chapter make the text visually appealing and easy to follow.
  • A Companion Website supplements the text.
