Essential Reading Skills is designed to improve students' reading and thinking skills through concise skill instruction, extensive guided practice, skill application, assessment, and feedback.

The text is organized into ten chapters, each focusing on a specific reading and thinking skill. Each chapter includes skill instruction, practice exercises, quizzes, and mastery tests. Because the text is brief and concise, students focus on the most essential college reading skills. Essential Reading Skills, the lower-level text in a two-book series, is intended for the 6th to 8th grade reading level.

  • Emphasis on essential skills. The text contains only the most important reading skills for college success: active reading and thinking, vocabulary development, literal and critical comprehension, and organizational emphasis.
  • Four-color, visually appealing design. Increasingly, college students are becoming visual learners, and visual literacy is critical to success in today's world. To facilitate visula learning photographs, diagrams, and charts clarify relationships and demonstrate paragraph organization.
  • Many practice exercises, review tests and mastery tests. Practice tests provide students with observable, measurable evidence that they are learning and improving their skills. Students are more prepared for an assessment or exit test the instructor assigns later.
  • Additional readings. Ten additional readings at the end of the text provide instructors with flexibility in choosing readings appropriate to the students' needs and interests.

  • Expanded content in key areas: fact and opinion, and tone and tone words in Chapter 10; signal words for synonym context clues in Chapter 2; more examples on finding the topic in Chapter 4; and more on transitions in Chapter 5.
  • New test-taking tips in every chapter are designed to help students prepare for and to pass key exit exams.
  • New vocabulary enrichment exercise is found at the end of every skill chapter.
  • A new writing component after each Mastery Test 3. Three questions for writing and three questions for discussion include specific prompts about the length or features of the writing.
  • A new focusing question for pre-reading, found in the Mastery Test 3 sections and Additional Reading Selections, gives students a focusing device with which to apply their existing knowledge or their previewing technique before delving into the reading.
  • A new topic, “Introduction to College Textbook Reading,” is located in the Student Resource Guide section.
  • The Answer key is now located in the Annotated Instructor's Edition.
