From Francis Bacon's “On Travel” to Annie Dillard's “Sojourner,” this collection of travel writing encompasses explorations on the road to journeys of the soul.

Everyone has traveled–in reality or in their imagination–and as a result has come to look at home and self differently. This book offers ways to find meaning in the reading of travel literature and writing about experience as a form of travel. The collection focuses on travel writing in a variety of ways: motives for travel, modes and places, social and moral issues in travel, race and gender issues, travel and personal growth, and travel versus the yearning to be home.

  • Comprised primarily of non-fiction–essays, traveloques, and excerpts from travel books, this wide-ranging anthology also includes short stories and poems.
  • The General Introduction provides an historical background of travel and travel writing while lending context to the selections that follow.
  • The selections are organized into four thematic sections that illustrate the scope of travel experience: "BEGINNING: Motives and Expectations," "PASSAGES: Destinations and Encounters," "ISSUES: Tourism and Exile," and "HOME: Memory and Return."
  • Author biographies preceding each selection provide background on the author and pertinent contextual information.
  • Suggested readings at the end of each author biography help students make connections with other selections and writers.
  • A bibliography of relevant books and writers included or mentioned in this anthology is provided for further reference.
  • A Film Appendix lists films that are based on selections in the text or could be used to expand upon or illustrate concepts touched upon in the selections.

*This tentative table of contents is for early review purposes; the final contents may not include all of the selections listed here.
