Description

Combining classical rhetorical strategies with readings on highly current topics, this argument rhetoric and reader is aimed at instructors who want their students to understand rhetorical principles, and apply them to their argumentative writing.

The goal of Classical Techniques and Contemporary Arguments is to encourage students to link contemporary issues, such as patriotism and nationalism, gay and lesbian rights, and digital copyright laws to classical rhetorical concepts. Using a conversational style and accessible approach, the text identifies a variety of rhetorical strategies, explains them through extensive illustrative examples, and shows students how to apply these strategies to their writing.  Other distinctive features include chapter-length treatment s of reading rhetorically, writing a research paper, and recognizing and creating oral and visual arguments.

Features

  • Offers a foundation of rhetoric’s history and purposes, which allows students to apply rhetorical principles to contemporary problem solving situations.
  • “Real Rhetoric” boxes in every chapter give students practical exercises to apply the skills presented.  Designed to be challenging, these exercises will help to boost confidence and understanding.
  • An in-depth discussion of dialectic, the search for truth accomplished through structured dialog, in Chapter 3 helps students in their processes of invention, idea generation, and expansion.
  • Chapter 7 “Thinking Critically about Research” offers detailed discussions on developing, evaluating, and revising argumentative research papers.  Sample MLA and APA student papers are also included.
  • A variety of professional readings show students how writers write and think about argumentative issues.
  • Key terms in rhetoric are called out by “Defining Rhetoric” boxes throughout the chapters.
