Gaining Word Power helps college students build and retain better vocabularies and become more effective strategic readers.

Based on more than thirty years of the author's teaching experience, this comprehensive vocabulary book generates a basic college-level vocabulary quickly, effectively and pleasurably. It incorporates a number of proven vocabulary-building approaches that are grounded in sound learning theory. In each self-contained lesson, words are presented on graduated levels of difficulty, followed by challenging exercises and writing activities and reinforced by immediate access to solutions. This approach enables students to progress at their own pace and evaluate their progress.

Although this text has a distinct pedagogical structure, a variety of practices, crossword puzzles, writing exercises, analogy activities and numerous cartoons throughout challenge students to learn using a variety of strategies while continuously emphasizing the reading-writing connection.

• Vocabulary words for each lesson are presented in the context of a story to stimulate student interest.
• Additional practice sets at the end of each chapter assist students who want extra help as well as those who are ready to tackle more difficult words.
• Words derived less obviously from combining forms are presented to help students build new words and to decipher unfamiliar ones.
• End-of-chapter analogies and exercises enable students to use chapter vocabulary to develop higher-order thinking skills.
• The end-of-chapter section, “Gaining Word Power on the Internet,” gives students practice working with the Internet.
• End-of-the-chapter riddles that encourage students to think analytically about the vocabulary words presented. This “Fun with Words” feature will help students retain the words they have learned
• Revised and updated readings and exercises. Many readings and exercises have been updated and revised to include issues that are relevant to college students such as sports, college life, jobs, and money matters.
• Technology Advantage–Vocabulary Web site. Each chapter refers students to the Vocabulary Web site (www.ablongman.com/vocabulary) for additional exercises.

• Thoroughly updated list of vocabulary words. as well as different puzzles and cartoons engage students and help them retain lessons from each chapter.
