Study and Critical Thinking Skills in College presents a unique integration of study and critical thinking skills designed to help students become academically competitive.

Study and Critical Thinking Skills in College discusses the active learning strategies and techniques that develop students' proficiency in interacting with text and lecture material. The author emphasizes the cognitive approach to learning, the basis for how to apply study skills to academic disciplines, and how to identify early warning signs of academic difficulty. Critical thinking tips and activities are included in every chapter.

  • Metacognition, critical thinking, and learning styles. Critical thinking and metacognition are hallmarks of the McWhorter series. Critical thinking is incorporated throughout the text in instruction, exercises, and readings. Metacognitive activities include teaching students how to evaluate their own learning styles to increase their ability to read college material successfully.
  • Active Learning. Students learn to approach study as an active thinking process and are encouraged to take an active role in learning by thinking critically about and interacting with text and lecture material.
  • Discipline Specific Study Skills. Part Three shows students how to apply skills to various academic disciplines. Techniques for approaching the social sciences, natural sciences, mathematics, arts and humanities, and career fields are discussed. The importance of learning specialized and technical vocabulary is stressed, and specific learning strategies are suggested.
  • At the end of every chapter, “Thinking Ahead” sections offers students pragmatic motivation for excelling in college: their future success in the workplace depends on it.
  • Integrated coverage of using multimedia channels to enhance various study skills emphasizes to students the importance of mastering these new forms of communication and research.
  • Exercises and examples that reflect the wide range of cultures and ages of college students allowing all types of students to relate to material presented.

  • Chapter 15, Visual and Electronic Sources. This new chapter discusses how to read and learn from visual sources such as film, video, and television and how to use CD-ROMs and web sites that accompany many texts. A section on reading and evaluating Internet sources has been added.   Students learn four different types of Web sites:   educational, commercial, personal, and organizational. Students are encouraged to evaluate purpose, content, timeliness, and accuracy.
  • "Real Students Speak" Student Profiles. A profile of an actual college student is included in every chapter. In each profile, the student’s academic affiliation and goals are identified and the student’s advice for applying skills taught in the chapter are featured.
  • Section on Academic Integrity. Chapter 2 now includes coverage of building and maintaining academic integrity. Forms of academic dishonesty, avoiding plagiarism, and cyber-plagiarism are emphasized.
  • Revised Web Activities. Now an interactive feature at the end of each chapter, “The Web Connection,” helps students find additional resources for improving learning and study skills at respected academic Web sites and perform an activity that enables them to evaluate or apply the site’s content.
  • Inclusion of Bloom’s revised taxonomy. Material on the levels of thinking in Chapter 1 and in the Interactive Chapter Reviews throughout the text has been revised to reflect the updated Bloom’s taxonomy prepared by Lorin Anderson, et al., A Revision of Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Objectives (2000).
  • "Work Connection" features at the end of each chapter encourage students to explore workplace applications of chapter content—helping students realize the long-term benefit of the topic at hand.
