Online Student Skills and Strategies Handbook, a brief guide to studying and learning online, offers step-by-step tutorials to help students master the computer competencies and the skills and strategies necessary to succeed in the online environment.

This Online Student Skills and Strategies Handbook uses a diagnostic approach to help students assess their competencies in online learning, followed by detailed step-by-step tutorials that walk students through the skills necessary to study and learn with a computer. Topics include using email effectively, online netiquette, using the course syllabus, avoiding plagiarism online, dealing with online learning difficulties like eye-strain, managing time, and creating effective learning environments. This handbook is useful as an ancillary text for all courses that incorporate online learning tools.

  • Chapter 1 contains five self-assessments keyed to each of the five chapter tutorials.  The assessment results help students determine if they are ready for online learning in the key areas of technical literacy, Internet literacy, awareness and understanding of online education, and online student skills.
  • Each tutorial chapter begins with an introduction explaining the tutorial, and is followed by a step-by-step guided study, offering a foolproof method to complete tutorials.
  • Numerous images throughout visually guide students through the necessary steps to complete the tutorial.
  • Each tutorial is followed by a list of relevant Internet resources that provide students with additional material for each topic and additional information for further study and action.
  • A unique chapter on Online Learning Pitfall Solutions (Ch. 6) looks at fifteen pitfalls that students may encounter, from computer-specific problems such as eye strain, to organizational problems like knowing how to get help with course content, setting up an online study schedule, and physical environment issues related to furniture and lighting setup.
  • A comprehensive website created by the authors offers additional web links and activities.
  • Applicable as an ancillary text for all online courses.
